The Compass of the Unseen: The Aether-Reach Divination Board

The Aether-Reach Divination Board is an engraved wooden pendulum board — 26 letters, numbers 0–9, YES and NO, heart-shaped planchette included. 20 designs. From the Aether-Reach, where the sky delivers the future in crystal form and the entities who live there have been reading it since before the druids found the portal.

The compass does not point north.

This is the first thing Chelle understood when she held the board for the first time — that it is oriented differently than any instrument she had encountered before. Not toward magnetic north, not toward true north, not toward any fixed point in the geography of the world she was standing in. The board points toward the question. Toward the thing the person holding it most needs to find. It is a compass for the unseen — for the territory that has no map because maps require fixed points and the unseen does not have any.

She had been in the Aether-Reach for two hours when she found it, moving through the mist line at the threshold zone where the crystal rain stops falling and the portal's gravity begins to assert itself. The indigo sky above her was doing what it always does — building, shifting, the deep violet moving between blue-black and something that has no name in any language that doesn't also have a word for the feeling you get when you understand something you have been circling for years. She was not looking for anything specific. She rarely is, in the Reach. The Reach has its own ideas about what you need and tends to arrange for you to find it whether you were looking or not.

The board was on a flat stone at the edge of the mist. Already engraved. The letters in their precise arc — the same arc the Observatory keepers use on their instruments, the same arc the Zoltar Stations use on their internal mechanisms, the same arc that appears in every tradition that has ever tried to translate the language of the sky into the language of the person asking. The numbers 0 through 9. YES on the left. NO on the right. The symbols of the threshold carved into the border — not decorative, the specific symbols the Reach's entities use to mark a translation instrument. A compass for the territory that has no fixed points.

The heart-shaped planchette was at the center, as if placed there by someone who had just stepped away.

She picked it up. She held it in both hands and felt the frequency of it — the particular quality of something made in the Reach, where the planetary rain has been falling since before the druids found the portal, where the future exists in crystal form and the entities who live there have been reading it since before any human tradition had a word for what they were doing. The board was warm. Not from the stone. From within. The warmth of something that has been holding a question for a very long time and is ready to give it to the person who was always going to ask it.

She brought it back. She set it on the counter. She did not explain where it had come from — not because it was a secret, but because some things explain themselves to the person who needs to understand them, and the explanation belongs to that person, not to the story of how it arrived.

Midnight lowered his head through the skylight when she set it down. His great sapphire eye moved across the engraving — the letters, the numbers, the threshold symbols, the arc that the Observatory keepers have been using since before the first druid found the portal and came home carrying the knowledge that became every horoscope, every birth chart, every tradition of reading the sky for guidance on how to live. He tilted his great head. He has been watching the Aether-Reach from altitude since before the Observatory keepers started keeping records. He knows what a compass for the unseen looks like. He knows what it means when one arrives at the mist line already engraved, already warm, with the planchette at the center.

He rumbled once. Low. The rumble of recognition — of a dragon who has seen the Reach's instruments in their original context and knows what this one is capable of in the hands of the right person.

Cinder sat down beside the counter without ceremony. Ash came from wherever Ash comes from and looked at the board with the focused attention of a wolf conducting important research, and then did not knock it over. Chelle stood at the back of the room and watched all of this and said nothing. She smoothed her hair with one hand — the gesture she makes when she is pulling something back, when she is choosing patience over the thing she could say. She knows what the board is. She knows who it is for. She is waiting for that person to find it.

You set the planchette on the surface. You hold it lightly — the way you hold anything you want to receive rather than control. You ask your question into the space between the known and the unknown, the space the Reach has been holding open since before the druids found the portal, the space that is always there, always available, always slightly more present than the ordinary air around it. And you wait.

The planchette moves. Toward letters. Toward numbers. Toward YES or toward NO. The compass points toward the question. It has always pointed toward the question. The unseen territory is not empty — it is full of the things you already know and have not yet let yourself find. The board is the instrument that makes the finding possible. The Reach made it. The mist line held it. It is here now.

The compass does not point north. It points toward what you came here to ask. It has been waiting for you to ask it.
