The Closet has a drawer.
Nobody installed it. Nobody remembers it being there before the morning Chelle opened it and found three rings sitting in a row on the bare wood, as if they had been placed there by someone who knew exactly how much space three rings require and had arranged them accordingly. The drawer is at the base of the Closet's left door — the one that swings open most easily, the one the shirts favor when they are making their exits. It is shallow, unlined, and it smells faintly of cedar and something older than cedar. It is always slightly warm.
The shirts do not go in the drawer. The drawer is for things that are not shirts. The Closet, which has opinions about everything, has apparently decided that the drawer is for things that belong on hands — things that are too small to hang, too specific to shelve, too ready to wait on wood in the dark for the person who is going to open the drawer and understand immediately that what they are looking at was always going to be theirs.
Chelle found the skull first. She picked it up and turned it in the amber light — the open band, the adjustable fit, the stone at the center catching the light the way stones catch light when they have been chosen rather than assigned. She set it back. She found the dragon next — the coil of it, the particular authority of a creature rendered in miniature that loses none of its weight in the reduction. She set it back. She found the snake last, and she held it the longest, because the snake is the oldest symbol in the Attic's vocabulary and she has a long memory for old things.
She closed the drawer. She went to find Luna.
Luna opened the drawer, looked at all three, and said nothing for a moment that was longer than her usual silences. Then: "The Closet is getting ambitious."
Chelle agreed. The Closet, which had previously confined itself to tees and the occasional accessory that drifted in from the spherical library, had apparently decided to expand its jurisdiction. The drawer was new territory. The rings were a statement. The Closet was not asking permission. It never does.
Cinder came in from the back and sat beside the Closet door with the particular dignity of a wolf who has assessed a situation and decided it does not require his intervention but does require his presence. Ash knocked something off the far shelf — not the drawer, not the rings, something entirely unrelated — and then sat down and looked at the ceiling as if she had been sitting there the whole time and had no idea what anyone was talking about.
The drawer is still there. It opens easily. The rings are in it — skull, dragon, snake, 25 stone colors, open band, adjustable, the particular fit of something that was made to find the hand rather than require the hand to find it. The Closet knows what it's doing. It always has. The drawer is simply the newest evidence.
