The pack remembers every face that has ever come to the tree line. Every face that arrived with empty hands. Every face that waited. The ones who were answered and the ones who were not. The ones who came back and the ones who didn’t. The Expanse is long and the timber is deep and the wolves have been here since before the first human put a name to this territory. They were here before the name. They will be here after it. They remember everything.

What Cinder Carried

He came through the portal at the hour when the Attic is quietest — the particular stillness between midnight and the first suggestion of morning, when even the candles seem to be listening for something. Chelle was at the back counter with her crystals. Luna was on the stairs, which is where she goes when she is thinking about something she has not yet decided to say out loud. Ash was asleep under the long table, one paw extended, dreaming whatever wolves dream when the portal is open and the Expanse is close.

Cinder came through carrying something.

Twelve portraits, rolled carefully, gripped in his teeth with the particular precision of a wolf who takes these things seriously and has absolutely no interest in making it look easy. He set them down on the oak floor in the center of the room — not the table, not the counter, the floor, the exact center — and stepped back and sat. Straight-backed. Still. The posture of a wolf who has delivered something significant and is now waiting for the room to understand what it has received.

Midnight, on the rooftop, rumbled once. Low and slow. The rumble he reserves for things that have been a long time coming.

Luna came down the stairs.

She unrolled the first portrait without being asked — this is how Luna handles things that interest her, which is to say immediately and without ceremony — and held it up to the candlelight. A wolf’s face. Full front. The kind of stillness in the eyes that is not absence of power but complete command of it. She looked at it for a long time. Then she looked at Cinder. Then she looked at the portrait again.

Those are real wolves, she said.

Not a question. A recognition. Luna knows the difference between a wolf that has been imagined and a wolf that has been seen. Between a wolf that has been drawn from memory or reference or artistic instinct and a wolf that has been known — stood across from, looked at directly, held in the attention of someone who understood what they were looking at and did not look away. These portraits had been made by someone who had been to the tree line. Someone who had waited. Someone who had been answered.

She unrolled the second. The third. All twelve, laid out across the oak floor in the candlelight, twelve faces from the Expanse looking up at the ceiling of the Attic with the calm, absolute authority of creatures who have never once in their lives needed to prove what they are.

Ash woke up.

She lifted her head from under the table, assessed the situation, and came out to investigate — nose first, the way she investigates everything, moving from portrait to portrait with the focused attention of a wolf conducting a census. She stopped at the seventh. Sat down in front of it. Looked at it with the particular intensity she reserves for things she has decided are hers.

Cinder watched her do this. He said nothing. He is very good at this.

Chelle came from the back counter and stood at the edge of the portraits without stepping on any of them — she never steps on things that have been laid out with intention — and looked at all twelve in the candlelight. She stood with her hands open at her sides, the posture she uses when she is listening to something that does not speak in words. The portraits did not speak in words. They spoke in the language of the Expanse, which is older than words and does not require them.

She looked at Cinder. He looked back at her with the steady, dignified attention of a wolf who has done what he came to do and is waiting to see if the humans understand it.

They understood it.

The Expanse Remembers

The Wolfsong Expanse is not a place you visit. It is a place that decides whether to receive you. The high timber country, the salmon rivers, the territory that was claimed not given — it has its own logic, its own seasons, its own understanding of who belongs and who is passing through and who will not be passing through again. The wolves know the difference. They have always known. The pack has been reading faces at the tree line since before the Hall of Three Oaths was built on the older ground, since before the skalds had words for the compact, since before anyone thought to write down what it meant to arrive with empty hands and wait.

The ancient people of the Expanse knew this. The ones who came before the Hall, before the oaths, before the names — the Celtic and Norse who arrived at the tree line and stood still and waited and were answered. They lived alongside the wild wolf for generations, neither servant nor master, the only civilization the pack ever accepted on those terms. Their offerings are still in the earth of Fenrisheim. Their patterns were pressed into metal and stone as covenants. The pack remembers them. The pack remembers every face.

Cinder carries that memory. It is in his blood the way the compact is in Luna’s blood — not learned, not chosen, simply present, the way certain things are present in creatures who have been part of something long enough that the something becomes part of them. When he goes back to the Expanse, the territory knows him. The timber parts for him. The salmon rivers run the way they run for a wolf who belongs there, which is differently than they run for anything else.

He brought back twelve faces because twelve faces were worth bringing. That is the only criterion that matters in the Wolfsong Expanse. Not beauty. Not drama. Not the kind of portrait that announces itself and demands attention. Worth. The quiet, absolute worth of a face that has been fully itself in the full presence of the wild, and been seen, and been remembered.

The pack remembers every face.

Now, so can you.
