Raven’s Passage alloy bird-skull ring on a Fenrisheim tree branch, with ravens, a brass button, fairy-size Luna, and wolves below.

The Price of a Brass Button

The raven took The Raven’s Passage — Adjustable Bird Skull Ring while Luna was tying her boot. One moment, the antique-silver-tone alloy ring lay on her folded scarf, its long beak pointing toward the timber. The next, a living beak closed around it.

Luna looked up.

The bird looked down.

Across the ring’s crown, the radiating stave-style pattern caught a bright scrap of afternoon.

“Absolutely not,” she said.

The raven opened its wings.

Ash was moving before it left the stump.

The Wrong Thing to Leave Shining

They had returned to Fenrisheim without intending to bring anything home.

That was important to Luna, though she had not said it aloud. The Expanse was not a room behind the shop where she went to restock the drawer. Cinder and Ash had a life here that did not require her hands, her pockets, or her opinion of what might look good beneath the display lamp.

Sometimes they let her walk with them.

Today, the river ran beyond the trees, the air smelled of damp bark, and a tangle of fallen branches had made the familiar trail considerably less familiar.

She had taken the ring off before working her way through it. The raised skull and pointed beak were fine on an open hand, less useful among snagging twigs.

Then a lace had loosened.

Then she had needed both hands.

Then the raven had made a decision.

By the time Luna stood, it was three trees away.

“That,” she told the empty stump, “was not an offering.”

Cinder stood at the trail’s edge, looking upward.

He had no comment on her arrangements.

Below the Flight

Ash did not run directly beneath the bird.

She cut across the slope.

Luna followed far enough to see why: the straight route ended at a screen of young timber and a steep fold in the ground. The way Ash chose curved around it, keeping the raven’s movements visible between the older trunks.

Cinder took the higher line.

For several moments, Luna could see neither wolf.

Only the raven.

Only the small bright shape swinging beneath its beak.

It landed once, shifted the ring, and flew again.

“You aren’t even wearing it correctly.”

The bird disappeared into a dark crown of branches.

Luna stopped at the foot of the tree.

Far above her, a raven called.

Another answered.

She looked at the trunk.

Then at the branches.

Then at the very long distance between them and the ground.

“Of course.”

What Cinder Had Found

Cinder appeared beyond the tree, not beside it.

He stood near a low rise where the roots of several old trunks overlapped. From there, Luna could see a thick limb extending behind the crown that had swallowed the raven.

A better approach.

Not an easy one.

She went to him.

Ash emerged beneath the limb, looked upward, then continued around the far side.

The raven called again.

Its answer came from much farther away than Luna wanted.

She could climb. She could also spend the rest of the afternoon climbing toward a bird that possessed wings and no respect whatsoever for effort.

So she took off her coat.

Folded the scarf beneath it.

Checked the pockets and tucked the loose things safely inside.

Then she paused over a brass button near the coat’s cuff.

It was bright at the rim, worn dark in the middle.

Luna looked up at the tree.

“Let’s see how sophisticated your taste actually is.”

Above the Wolves

Her wings opened only after she had become fairy-small.

The forest changed around her.

What had been a gap between branches became a corridor. Moss rose in soft ridges along the bark. A bead of water clung beneath a twig, large enough to hold a trembling upside-down sky.

She flew close to the trunk.

Below, Cinder moved through the roots. Ash remained on the other side of the tree.

From above, their positions made sense in a way they had not from the trail.

They were keeping the crown in sight from different angles.

Luna climbed through the air.

At the first great fork, she landed and folded her wings.

The raven stood on a branch beyond her.

The ring lay beneath one black foot.

For a moment, she simply looked at it.

At this size, the skull was no longer a piece she could turn casually between two fingers. Its eye socket made a dark opening beside the bird’s claws. The long metal beak projected beyond the bark.

The raven lowered its head.

Luna took one step backward.

“We are not doing that either.”

A Very Unequal Negotiation

The bird hopped toward her.

She moved behind a knot of wood.

Its beak struck the place where she had been standing.

Luna’s green eyes gathered a thin blue light.

She could hurt it.

The thought arrived cleanly, without difficulty.

Then she looked past it at the ring and understood how ridiculous the afternoon would become if she started a war in the canopy over something she had left shining on a stump.

She launched herself down the sheltered side of the branch.

The raven lunged.

Air struck her wings.

She dropped beneath the limb, turned hard around its underside, and caught a narrow shelf of bark beside the trunk.

Above her, claws scraped.

Below her, Ash gave one short bark.

Not alarm.

Direction.

Luna looked through the branches.

The raven had moved along the limb, leaving the ring behind.

For several heartbeats, the way to it was clear.

Then a second raven landed beside it.

Luna closed her eyes.

“Excellent. Management.”

The Button

She came down on the sheltered side of the trunk and returned to human form beside her coat.

Cinder looked at her.

“They have a strong position.”

He continued looking.

“I’m revising the offer.”

With a small blade from her pocket, she cut the threads holding the brass button.

She rolled it across her palm.

Bright rim. Dark centre.

Not enchanted. Not ancient. Not carrying an oath from a vanished people.

A perfectly serviceable button, which had until recently been having a perfectly serviceable day.

Luna put away the blade.

This time, she climbed in human form.

The thick limb Cinder had shown her began above the root rise. She could reach it without trusting the thinner outer branches, and she stopped where it remained broad enough to hold her close to the trunk.

She did not try to reach the ring.

She placed the button on the bark.

Then she climbed back down.

What the Raven Chose

Waiting was the part she liked least.

She did it anyway.

The first raven noticed the button.

It leaned forward.

The second raven noticed the first raven noticing.

There followed a short conversation in which neither bird appeared to improve the other’s mood.

Luna stood beside Cinder with her arms folded.

“I could have offered a matching pair.”

His ear moved.

“I’m not going to.”

Ash had come around beneath the branch. She stood motionless, watching the narrow space between the two birds.

The first raven hopped toward the button.

The second followed.

The ring remained where it was.

Luna waited until both birds had moved beyond the next fork.

Then she went small again.

No direct flight across the open space this time.

She took the underside of the limb, climbed through a screen of fine twigs, and emerged behind the ring.

Above her, the ravens disputed ownership of a brass button neither had earned.

Luna touched the alloy skull.

Cool metal. Dark cuts across the crown.

She did not try to fly away carrying it.

Instead, she slipped back through the twigs, descended, and returned to human form at the roots.

The birds had shown her where the ring rested.

Now she could reach it from the thicker branch without searching, without leaning out, and without putting her fingers anywhere near a raven’s feet.

She climbed once more.

Reached.

Closed her hand.

Farther along the limb, the first raven secured the button.

It looked at her.

Luna looked back.

Neither suggested reopening negotiations.

The Passage Home

She wrapped the ring before putting it in her pocket.

The raven departed with the button.

The second followed, loudly dissatisfied with the division of assets.

Ash watched them go.

Then she turned toward the deeper timber.

Cinder followed her.

Luna had expected the return trail.

She looked in that direction, then back at the wolves.

“We’re not finished?”

Ash paused between two trunks.

The river sounded somewhere beyond her.

Luna put on her coat.

One cuff hung a little differently now.

She went after them.

The afternoon still belonged to Fenrisheim. Recovering her ring had not made her the person who decided when it ended.

A Smaller Loss

Chelle noticed the missing button before Luna had reached the counter.

“Branch?”

“Trade.”

Chelle looked at the coat.

Then at the wrapped ring.

“For that?”

“To keep that.”

Midnight lowered his sapphire head through the skylight.

Luna unwrapped the skull ring beneath his gaze.

The long beak caught the display light. On the crown, the radiating marks remained exactly as they had been before the raven decided to appreciate them.

“A difficult buyer,” she said.

Midnight tilted his head.

“No language. No regard for provenance. Extremely fixed requirements.”

Chelle’s mouth curved.

“Someone you understood, then.”

Luna pointed at her.

Chelle opened the little box where she kept spare buttons.

Across the shop, Ash settled near Cinder. He shifted one forepaw, leaving a little more room beside him without looking at her.

She used it.

Luna put the ring back in the drawer.

Then she checked that the latch had caught.

The Attic knows the price of a treasure is sometimes a brass button, a long climb, and the good sense not to insult the bird.

About This Piece

The Raven’s Passage — Adjustable Bird Skull Ring is an alloy statement ring with an elongated pointed beak, open eye sockets, and an open-band design. Its listed finish is Antique Silver, a colour description rather than a claim of sterling silver.

Choose between the radiating stave-style motif featured in this chapter and the darker ornamental scrollwork design. The options are individual ring selections, not a two-ring set.

The ring is listed as resizable, but a precise minimum and maximum size have not been supplied. Adjust gently and avoid repeated bending. Its raised, pointed profile may catch on knitwear or delicate fabrics; remove it before manual work, exercise, or other activities where snagging could be a problem.

Keep dry, avoid perfume and cleaning chemicals, and wipe gently with a soft cloth. The specific alloy and nickel content are unconfirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Raven’s Passage made from real bone?

No. The bird skull is a decorative metal design made from alloy.

Is Antique Silver the material?

No. Antique Silver is the listed finish name. It does not establish solid silver or 925 sterling silver construction.

Will the adjustable ring fit every finger?

Not necessarily. The open band is listed as resizable, but the usable adjustment range has not been confirmed.

What is the difference between the two designs?

One has a radiating stave-style design across the skull’s crown. The other carries darker recessed ornamental scrollwork. Match your selected option to its photograph.

Does the crown symbol make it a working compass?

No navigation, protection, or other supernatural performance is claimed. The ring’s design and its fictional Fenrisheim adventures are separate from its practical use as jewellery.

Is the ring an authenticated Viking artifact?

No. It is modern Viking-inspired fashion jewellery. The Fenrisheim discovery belongs to the fictional world of Pedlar’s Attic, not archaeological provenance.

Does this retell the river discovery?

No. The product page follows Ash’s riverbank find and the pack’s approval. This later chapter follows a living raven, a temporarily borrowed ring, and a negotiation Luna had not planned.
