The Rain of a Century: The Arrival of the Hundred Evenings

The Hundred Evenings — Boho Water Drop & Feather Earrings are long boho water drop and feather dangle earrings in 26 styles — alloy, feather, acrylic, rhinestone crystal, 7–15cm, 10–18g per pair. They are made in the dusk light above the Becoming Places on the Sunrise Steppes mesa. Not in the morning. Not at midday. In the last hour, when the canyon walls go copper and the stream below catches the light from a different angle than it caught it all day, and the colors that come out of the stone country in that hour exist nowhere else on the map.
The Soraveen have a name for the quality of light that comes in the last hour above the Becoming Places. It does not translate. The closest approximation in any language that has been brought through the portal is something like: the light that knows it is leaving and has decided to be generous about it. The canyon walls go copper. The stream goes amber. The sky above the mesa rim goes the particular blue that only comes after the world has decided what kind of day it was — not the blue of morning, which is a question, but the blue of evening, which is an answer.
The man who faces west has been making things in this light for longer than anyone on the mesa has been keeping track of him. He does not make things in the morning — that is the old woman's domain, the east rim, the first light, the questions. He makes things in the last hour, in the answers, in the light that is generous because it is leaving. He learned this not from being taught but from watching — from the particular education of someone who pays attention to everything and hears what isn't being said.
The water drop is the Becoming Places made wearable — the round polished clarity of something the river has finished working on, released into the shallows, catching the last light from below the water at the precise angle that makes it look lit from inside. He found the shape in the shallows first. He made the earring after. The rhinestone crystal carries the same frequency as the water in the last hour — not the cold clarity of morning water but the warm amber of water that has been in the sun all day and is finally, quietly, cooling.
The feather carries the weight of the long afternoon. Not the lightness of morning feathers — the old woman uses the blue eagle feathers from the eastern slopes, the feathers of the first light, the feathers that carry the frequency of questions. His feathers are different. They carry the weight of a day that has been fully lived, the particular heaviness of something that has been in the wind all day and has finally come to rest. They are not heavy to wear. They are heavy in the way that things that have been through something are heavy — with the weight of having been through it, which is different from the weight of carrying it.
26 styles. 26 evenings. Each one a different expression of the same last hour — the copper evening, the amber evening, the blue evening, the evening that needed a feather to carry it out, the evening that needed something that would catch the last light in a room and hold it a little longer than the room expected. He made one for each kind of day the stone country produces. The stone country produces many kinds of days. He has been paying attention to all of them.
Chelle came to the west rim on the evening of the Song of the Hundred Evenings — the night the man who faces west had all of his pieces laid out on the flat stone, facing the valley, in the order of the light. She stood beside him for a long time. The Becoming Places were doing what they always do. The light was doing what it does in the last hour. She bought 13. She wanted them all. She knew how hasty that would be in the Soraveen village. The other half found where they belonged on their own.
Midnight rumbled once when she came through the portal. Low. Warm. The sound he makes when something arrives that was worth the journey. He has been watching the west rim from altitude since before the man who faces west arrived at it. He knows what the last hour above the Becoming Places produces. He is not going to explain it. The earrings explain it, to the person wearing them, in the particular quality of light they catch and hold in a room long after the room has stopped expecting it.

The Soraveen artisan at the west rim of the Sunrise Steppes mesa — the counterpart to the old woman who faces east. She makes things in the first light. He makes things in the last. What are the Becoming Places?
The river valleys below the Soraveen's eastern marker — where the current slows and deposits what it has finished polishing. The west rim overlooks them. The last hour above the Becoming Places is the light the Hundred Evenings are made in.
