He went completely still, the way he goes still for the highest things, the things that sit above all other powers in the hierarchy he has always understood and never needed to explain. He lowered his great sapphire head through the skylight and looked at the pendant in Cinder's hand for a long time. Then he looked at Cinder. Then he went back to the rooftop.
Chelle came from the crystal shelf. She looked at the eagle. She looked at the Vegvisir. She looked at Cinder, who was already back at the door, already watching the street, already returned to the business of being Cinder, which is the business of standing between the things he cares about and whatever is coming.
