The Weaver of Shadows: The Collector’s Shroud

The Weaver of Shadows — The Collector Grim Reaper 3D Print Tee | Ashen Plains | Luna | Pedlar's Attic

The Collector — Grim Reaper 3D Print Tee is an oversized 3D graphic tee in six colorways — each one a different rendering of the same figure, the same hollow gaze, the same scythe catching light from no visible source. He has been coming to the Attic for a long time. This is not the first time he has been seen. It will not be the last.

The thing about the Collector is that he does not announce himself. He is simply present — in the margin of a doorway, at the edge of a corridor, at the far end of a market stall in a place where the lights are always on and the music is always playing and no one who works there remembers arriving. He does not take anything that is not already his. He simply collects what was always meant to come home. The Ashen Plains understand this. The Plains have always understood this. They were built, in part, on the same logic.

Luna had not gone to the Plains looking for him. She had gone for something else — she always goes for something else, and the Plains always have opinions about what she actually needs, which is not always the same thing as what she came for. She had been in the interior, past the standing stone circle, moving west toward the Laughing Dark's outer lights, when she felt the particular quality of stillness that means something in the Plains has decided to be noticed.

He was at a stall she had not seen before. Not the Skull Merchant — she knows the Skull Merchant's energy, and this was different. Quieter. More patient. The stall had the quality of something that had been here for a very long time and was not in any hurry, which is the quality of most things in the Ashen Plains but was more pronounced here, more deliberate, as if the patience itself was the point. The tee was folded on the cloth in front of him. Six versions. Six colorways. The same figure in each — robes, scythe, hollow gaze fixed on something just past the edge of the fabric, the 3D print so vivid and so deep that the image looked less like a graphic and more like a window into a room where the light source was not visible and the figure was standing very still and had been standing very still for a very long time.

She picked up the first one. Held it at arm's length. Studied the graphic the way she studies things in the Plains — with complete attention and no urgency, because urgency in the Ashen Plains is the kind of thing that gets noticed by the wrong things.

He looks patient, she said.

The vendor — if that was the right word for what he was — said nothing. He did not need to. The patience was self-evident. It had been self-evident for longer than Luna had been anything at all, and it would continue to be self-evident for longer than that, and the figure on the tee knew this and had made his peace with it in the particular way of things that have never needed to make peace with anything because they have always simply been what they are.

She bought all six colorways. The transaction was completed without ceremony. The Plains noted it and moved on, which is what the Plains do — they note things and move on, because they have been noting things and moving on since before anyone named them, and they are very good at it now.

Cinder was at the perimeter when she came out of the interior. He had not gone in past the stone circle. He assessed the bundle under her arm — six tees, six versions of the same figure — with the steady attention he gives to things that have been in the deep interior of the Plains and come back carrying the interior's particular quality of ancient patience. He fell into step beside her without comment. Ash appeared from somewhere and pressed her flank against Luna's leg for three steps and then peeled off toward something at the edge of the path that turned out to be a piece of ash-white mineral that she knocked over and then sat beside with the expression of a wolf who has conducted a thorough investigation and reached a satisfying conclusion.

Midnight went silent when they came through the portal. Not the rumble of recognition. Not the rumble of approval. Silent — the complete, held stillness he reserves for the highest things, the things that sit above all other powers in the hierarchy he has always understood and never needed to explain. He lowered his great sapphire head through the skylight and looked at the tees in Luna's arms for a long moment. Then he looked at Luna. Then he went back to the rooftop.

Luna set the six colorways on the counter. Chelle came from the crystal shelf, looked at them, looked at the figure on each one — the same hollow gaze, the same scythe, the same patient stillness rendered six different ways by six different hands that had all arrived at the same truth from different directions. She looked up at Luna.

"He's been here before," Chelle said.

"He's always been here," Luna said. "We just don't always see the stall."

The Collector does not take anything that is not already his. He simply collects what was always meant to come home. The tee is here now. The only question is whether it has found the right person yet — or whether the right person has found it.

Some things find you before you find them. The Collector has always known this. He has been patient about it for longer than patience has had a name.
