The Words He Brought Down story cover featuring a pale faux pearl rosary on linen and Chelle beside a weary traveler on the monastery mountain path.

The Words He Brought Down

The man was trying to put his boot back on when Chelle found him.

He had chosen a poor place to do it: a narrow turn in the mountain path, one shoulder pressed against the rock, the other exposed to a wind that kept lifting the loose end of his scarf.

He looked up as she approached.

“How much farther?”

Chelle stopped beside him.

Above them, the High Monastery lay somewhere beyond the cloud. In her bag, a linen-wrapped High Monastery Rosary — Faux Pearl & Long Bead Chain Necklace rested with the other pieces she was carrying down. Its 72cm beaded chain, pale faux pearls, and silver-tone crucifix had been laid into the cloth by hands still occupied with prayer.

She looked at the man’s foot.

“Farther than you should walk today.”

He pulled at the boot.

His face went white.

She crouched on the sheltered side of him.

“May I?”

After a moment, he let go.

The heel was rubbed raw. His stocking had dried against it. Chelle took clean cloth from her bag, then moved him a little farther from the exposed edge before doing anything else.

He kept looking up the path.

“I was told there’s a door you have to bow through.”

“There is.”

“And a chapel cut into the mountain.”

“Yes.”

“I only need to get there.”

Chelle loosened the boot’s laces all the way down.

“What happens when you do?”

He opened his mouth.

The wind took the first answer before it reached her.

He did not try it again.

She helped him cover the rubbed heel and ease the boot into place without pulling it tight. Then she offered him water.

He drank too quickly, stopped, and held the bottle in both hands.

Below the bend, the path passed behind a broad shoulder of rock. Chelle could see a sheltered patch where they could sit without having to brace themselves against every gust.

“We’re going there.”

“That’s down.”

“A little.”

He looked at her as though she had suggested something much larger.

Perhaps she had.

Getting him to his feet took patience. Getting him around the bend took more. He would not lean on her until his foot slipped; then he caught her arm so hard that both of them stopped.

“Sorry.”

“Keep holding.”

They reached the sheltered stone.

There, out of the wind, he seemed older.

Chelle sat beside him rather than above him. Her auburn braid had come loose around her face. She tucked a strand behind her ear and waited while he recovered his breath.

At last, he reached into his coat.

The folded paper he brought out had been opened so often that its creases were soft and nearly transparent.

“I wrote it down.”

She did not reach for it.

“In case I forgot when I got there.”

He unfolded it.

A few lines. Crossings-out. A place where the ink had spread.

“There were things I meant to put right before I came.”

He stared at the paper.

“Then I thought I ought to come first. Find the right words.”

Somewhere above them, a bell sounded through the cloud.

His face changed.

For a moment, Chelle thought he might try to stand.

Instead, he pressed the paper flat against his knee.

“I’m so close.”

She could have told him about her first arrival. The low threshold. The silence. The things she had understood there and the things she had never spoken of afterward.

She did not.

She opened her bag and brought out the linen bundle.

The rosary settled across her palm in a loose curve. Pale beads caught the thin daylight. Its crucifix rested against the cloth.

“Would you like to hold this?”

He nodded.

She placed it in his open hands.

For a while, he did nothing.

Then his thumb moved over one bead.

He looked toward the hidden monastery.

“Can I do it here?”

Chelle’s voice was quiet.

“You can speak here.”

She moved a short distance away, far enough to give him privacy, close enough that he would not have to call if he needed her.

The mountain remained cold. The cloud did not part. No sudden light crossed the stone.

Behind her, a man began badly.

Stopped.

Began again.

Chelle kept her eyes on the path below.

She did not count how long he took.

When he called her name, the paper was folded beside him. The rosary lay carefully across both hands.

“Thank you.”

He offered it back.

“Keep it,” she said.

He looked down.

“I can pay—”

She shook her head.

He closed his hands around it, gently this time.

They waited until he was ready to stand.

Then they went down.

It was not a graceful descent. He limped. They stopped often. Once he swore at a loose stone and then looked embarrassed.

Chelle handed him the water.

“It was a badly placed stone.”

A laugh escaped him before he could prevent it.

Lower on the path, where the air no longer seemed determined to take every breath back, he unfolded the paper again.

He read the first line.

Then turned it over and searched his pocket.

“Have you a pencil?”

Chelle found one in her bag.

He wrote with the paper braced against the rock, slowly, stopping twice to consider what came next.

She looked away.

When he returned the pencil, he folded the page with the new words inward.

“Someone I need to write to.”

“All right.”

He tucked it into his coat.

“I think I’ve kept them waiting.”

They walked on.

When Chelle returned to the Attic, there was one fewer rosary in the linen.

Luna noticed the space while helping her unpack.

“Found someone?”

Chelle nodded.

Luna smoothed the empty fold and set it aside.

Above them, Midnight remained silent.

He had carried his words toward the mountain. He brought different ones home.
