Three Cities, One Crossing

The Crossing Market — Tri-City Eye of Horus & Ankh Layered Pendant Necklace is a layered pendant necklace — Eye of Horus or Ankh, gold or steel chain. From the Crossing Market at the center of the Ashen Plains, where the three cities meet and everything that moves between them passes through.

The Crossing Market has no walls.

This is intentional. The three cities of the Ashen Plains — Ironspire to the north, the Bone Sovereign's territory to the east, the Merchant Quarter to the west — have been in various states of conflict, alliance, and complicated mutual dependence for longer than anyone currently living in any of them has been keeping records. The one thing they have always agreed on is the Crossing Market. The one place where the rules of all three cities apply simultaneously, which means the rules of none of them apply completely, which means the Crossing Market operates on its own logic — the logic of exchange, of the thing offered and the thing received, of the particular neutrality that exists in the space between competing powers when all of them need the space to exist.

Luna knows the Crossing Market the way she knows Ironspire — by its rhythms, its hierarchies, its specific geography of who stands where and what that means. She moves through it with the particular economy of someone who has been in enough markets to know that the thing you came for is rarely at the first stall, that the price quoted first is never the price paid, and that the most valuable things are always at the back, held by the traders who have been there long enough to know that the people who find them were always going to find them.

She found the Eye at the back of a stall run by a trader who had the particular stillness of someone who has been in the Crossing Market for a very long time and has stopped being surprised by anything. The Eye of Horus — the ancient symbol of protection, of the seeing that goes beyond ordinary sight, of the particular vigilance of a god who lost his eye and had it restored and understood, in the restoration, something about sight that he had not understood before. The trader set it on the cloth between them without being asked. Luna looked at it. She looked at the trader. The trader said nothing. The price was already understood. She paid it.

The Ankh was at the next stall — the key of life, the symbol that the Babylonians brought back from the Aether-Reach and the Egyptians encoded into every sacred site they built, the symbol that means: the door is open, the crossing is possible, the life on the other side of the threshold is real. Luna picked it up. She held both — the Eye in one hand, the Ankh in the other — and felt the weight of them. The particular gravity of symbols that have been in use for long enough that the use itself has gotten into the metal. She brought both back. She layered them on the same chain. She set them on the counter and stepped back.

Chelle came from the crystal shelf and looked at the layered pendants for a long time. She felt the Aether-Reach frequency in the Ankh — the portal symbol, the key, the thing the druids brought back and the Egyptians encoded into stone. She felt the protection frequency in the Eye — the vigilance, the restored sight, the particular quality of seeing that comes from having lost the ability and gotten it back. She looked up at Luna.

"The Crossing Market," Chelle said.

"The back stalls," Luna confirmed.

The necklace is here now. Eye of Horus or Ankh — two symbols, two frequencies, one crossing. Gold or steel. The Crossing Market sent them. The three cities agreed, for once, that these needed to leave the Plains and go somewhere they could be found by the person who was always going to need them.

The door is open. The crossing is possible. The life on the other side of the threshold is real.
