What the Stone Already Knew

The What the Stone Chose — Boho Turquoise Adjustable Ring is a stainless steel adjustable ring with turquoise stone center — 25 designs. From the Sunrise Steppes, where the earth works minerals to the surface over geological time and Chelle has been going for years.
The turquoise does not ask to be found. It simply arrives at the surface when it is ready.
This is the thing Chelle learned in her first season in the Soraveen's high country — that the earth above the Sunrise Steppes does not yield its minerals the way a mine yields them, under force, under extraction, under the particular violence of taking something that has not offered itself. The Soraveen do not mine. They wait. They read the surface the way she reads frequencies — with patience, with the understanding that the earth has its own timeline and that timeline is not negotiable and is also, always, exactly right. When the turquoise is ready to be found, it comes to the surface. Not before. Not after. The earth is not slow. It is precise.
She had been on the Steppes for four days when she found the first stone — not in the river valley, not in the Becoming Places where the round polished beads accumulate in the shallows, but on a flat shelf of rock above the valley where the wind comes through in a particular direction and the light hits the stone face at the angle that makes what is embedded in it visible. The turquoise was already at the surface. It had been working its way up for longer than she had been alive. It arrived the morning she was there to find it. This is not coincidence. The Soraveen have a word for it that translates, approximately, as: the earth knew who was coming.
She brought the stone back. She held it in her palm on the rooftop while Midnight watched from his end of the roof, his great head tilted at the particular angle he uses when he is reading the frequency of something she has brought back from the Steppes. He rumbled — the low, slow rumble of recognition, of a dragon who has been watching the Soraveen's high country from altitude for longer than the Soraveen have been keeping records and who knows what the turquoise carries when it comes up from the deep earth on its own terms.
The ring arrived later — the stone already set, the stainless steel band already open, already adjustable, already built for the hand that was going to find it rather than the hand that was going to be measured for it. Chelle set it on the crystal shelf. She did not label it. The stone knows what it is. The person who picks it up will know too — the particular weight of something that has been in the earth long enough to carry the earth's patience in it, the particular blue-green of a mineral that has been working toward the surface since before the civilization currently looking at it had a word for the color.
The stone chose to come up. The ring chose to be here. The hand that finds it will understand, when it does, that the choosing has been going on for a very long time and has simply arrived at the moment when all three things — the stone, the ring, the hand — are finally in the same place at the same time.
The earth knew who was coming. It has been working toward this moment since before you knew you were looking.
