Collection: Gifts & Novelties: Treasures for the Wonderfully Odd
It started, as most things at Pedlar's Attic do, with something Chelle said that she didn't realize anyone was listening to.
The Gifts & Novelties: Treasures for the Wonderfully Odd collection lives in the back corner of Pedlar's Attic — the shelf with no label and the light that is always a little warmer than it should be. This is where the portal sends the things that don't fit a category: Green Witch Oracle Cards, Ouija spirit boards, mystic pendulum boards, gravity-defying metal pendulums, crystal orgone pyramids, luminous zodiac glass ball pendants, Santa Muerte pendants, gothic lace midi dresses, fishnet over-elbow gloves, Alice in Wonderland rabbit rings, and the kind of gifts that make someone laugh out loud and then go quiet because they realize it's exactly right. For the wonderfully odd people in your life. For Luna.
Chelle said it quietly, to no one in particular, while she was updating the ledger at the front counter on a Tuesday morning: "Luna's birthday is coming." She said it the way she says most things — not loudly, not to anyone specifically, just into the air of the Attic the way you'd tell a room something it probably already knew.
Cinder heard it from his spot by the door. He lifted his head. Looked at the back corner of the shop. Looked at Ash, who was pretending to be asleep three feet away and was absolutely not asleep. Ash opened one eye. Cinder looked at the back corner again. Ash opened the other eye.
They went in together. This was, in retrospect, the first mistake.
Cinder approached the Wonderfully Odd section the way he approaches everything — with dignity, with purpose, with the full gravity of a wolf who has a plan. He studied the Mystic Moon Spirit Cat Pendulum Board for a long moment, head tilted, ears forward, reading it with the seriousness of someone who has never used a pendulum board but is absolutely certain he could figure it out. He looked at Ash. Ash looked at the pendulum board. Ash looked at Cinder. Something passed between them that was not quite a decision but was close enough. Cinder picked it up carefully in his mouth and set it aside. First candidate.
Ash found the Green Witch Oracle Cards next, or rather, she found the shelf they were on, which she investigated by putting her front paws on it, which caused three other things to slide off the shelf, which she observed with the expression of a wolf who had intended exactly this outcome and was satisfied with the results. The oracle cards she nosed toward Cinder. He examined them. Set them next to the pendulum board. Second candidate.
This is when things escalated.
The Ask the Spiral — Mystic Gravity-Defying Metal Pendulum Pendant was behind a glass cabinet. Cinder assessed the cabinet. Assessed the gap behind it. Looked at Ash. Ash was already behind the cabinet. There was a sound. Then another sound. Then the particular sound of something that had been on a high shelf deciding it would rather be on the floor. Ash emerged from behind the cabinet with the pendulum pendant and what appeared to be a Santa Muerte pendant that had come along uninvited. She set the pendulum pendant down in front of Cinder with the careful precision of someone who had definitely meant to retrieve exactly this item and nothing else. The Santa Muerte pendant she nudged under a nearby shelf with her nose. Cinder watched this. Said nothing. This is his greatest skill.
The Ouija Spirit Board they found together, which required both of them to investigate a lower cabinet simultaneously, which required them to be standing very close together in a small space, which neither of them acknowledged in any way whatsoever. Cinder found it first. Ash's nose bumped his ear when she leaned in to look. Cinder became very focused on the Ouija board. Ash stepped back and knocked over a crystal pyramid, which she then sat next to as though she had placed it there intentionally and this had always been her plan.
By this point the Wonderfully Odd section looked like it had experienced a very localized and highly specific natural disaster. Three things were on the floor. One thing was under a shelf. The crystal pyramid was on its side. The pendulum board had a paw print on it. Cinder and Ash stood in the middle of it holding their final selection between them — the Alice in Wonderland Rabbit Ring, which Ash had found on a low display and which was, they had both agreed in the wordless way wolves agree on things, exactly right for Luna. Wonderfully odd. Perfectly her. Obviously correct.
Then Luna came through the door.
She stopped. Looked at the section. Looked at Cinder. Looked at Ash. Looked at the section again.
Cinder stepped forward. Sat down directly in front of Luna with the full composed dignity of a wolf accepting whatever comes next. He met her eyes. He did not look at Ash. He did not look at the mess. He simply sat, and waited, and took it.
Luna's eyes went to Ash — who had, in the three seconds of Luna's attention being on Cinder, silently lifted the Alice in Wonderland ring in her teeth and was now approximately four feet further into the shadows than she had been a moment ago, moving with a stillness that was almost invisible, the ring held carefully, not a sound. She looked back at Cinder once, from the shadows. Just once. Something in her expression — in the set of her ears, in the way she paused before disappearing entirely — was not her usual chaos. It was something quieter. Something that looked, if you were watching closely enough, almost like gratitude. Almost like something more than that. Almost.
Cinder received the full weight of Luna's considerable displeasure without flinching. He is very good at this. He had known, when he stepped forward, exactly what he was doing. He has not examined why too closely. He is getting there. Slowly. With great dignity.
Chelle watched all of this from the front counter. She said nothing. She went back to the ledger. She was smiling in the way that means she already knew how it was going to go and has simply been waiting for everyone else to catch up.
Midnight, from the rooftop, rumbled once. Low. Warm. Approving.
Luna found the ring on her pillow that evening, wrapped in a scrap of dark cloth, no note. She held it up. Looked at it for a long moment. Put it on. Did not ask where it came from. Some gifts you just know.
The Wonderfully Odd section has been restocked. Most of it. The Santa Muerte pendant turned up eventually. Nobody has explained the paw print on the pendulum board and nobody is going to.
