Collection: Necklaces: Moonlit Adornments
In the beginning, there was a display case. And the display case was empty. And Chelle stood in front of it for a long time, her hand flat against the glass, listening. And then she said: "It's ready." And Luna said: "For what?" And Chelle said: "Everything." And Luna said nothing, because she has learned, after everything, that when Chelle says everything, she means it.
The Necklaces: Moonlit Adornments collection at Pedlar's Attic is the heart of the shop — turquoise feather pendants and dragonfly necklaces, fairy pearl hearts and Celtic moonstone pendants, Triple Moon Goddess chains and Wiccan pentagram amulets on one side; barbed wire gothic chokers, Viking dragon skull pendants, skull moth necklaces, punk multilayer chain sets, Egyptian ankh pendants, and stainless steel punk stud chokers on the other. Earth magic and dark fire. The full length of the Tao, rendered in copper, silver-tone stainless steel, natural stone, and moonstone, hanging from a display case that Chelle rearranges every season because she says the pieces shift their preferences, and she is not wrong.
The display case talks to itself after midnight. Chelle locks it. The necklaces talk anyway.
Chelle's side arrived the way she does — unhurried, inevitable, smelling faintly of somewhere warm. What the Wind Carries — a turquoise feather pendant in copper-tone — arrived first, wrapped in a single dried fern leaf with no note. She held it to the window. The turquoise caught the morning light and held it the way good stone does, like it had been waiting for exactly this angle of sun. Wings of the Wandering Soul, the dragonfly pendant, arrived next, still moving or seeming to. Heart of the Hollow — the fairy pearl heart — came wrapped in moss. The Three-Faced Moon and The Three-Fold Moon arrived together, which Chelle said was not a coincidence and Luna said was obviously a coincidence and Chelle smiled in the way that means she has already won the argument and is simply waiting for Luna to catch up.
The Celtic pieces came through in a cluster — the Witch's Knot Wiccan amulet, the Triskelion triple crescent, the Five-Pointed Oath pentagram, the Unbroken Knot Viking Celtic slavic amulet — and Chelle placed each one herself, slowly, on the highest shelf, in an order she has not explained to anyone. The Wanderer's Collar — the Tibetan boho statement necklace — she placed at eye level, because she said it needed to be seen first. She was right. It always gets seen first.
Midnight circled the rooftop three times the night the moonstone pendants arrived. Three times means something. Chelle knows what. She hasn't said.
Luna's side arrived differently. It always does.
Thorns of the Untamed — the barbed wire gothic choker — came in a box that smelled like iron and old rain. Luna opened it, held it against her throat, looked in the mirror behind the counter, and said nothing. She wore it out of the shop that afternoon. She brought it back the next morning and put it on the display. She has done this four times. It keeps ending up back on the display. The display keeps ending up back on her throat. This is between Luna and the choker and nobody else.
Bone & Fire — the Viking dragon skull pendant — arrived in a leather roll that smelled like smoke and somewhere very far north. Luna unrolled it on the counter, and Cinder — who had been asleep by the door — lifted his head, looked at it, and put his head back down with the expression of a wolf who has recognized something and decided it is not a threat. High praise. The Duskwing Pendant, the gothic skull moth necklace, Luna hung from her own neck before it reached the display. She wore it for three days. It is now on the display. It is the first thing people reach for. Luna watches this happen and says nothing and looks quietly satisfied.
The Weight of It — the punk multilayer chain set — is where things got complicated.
Ash knocked it off the counter the first time and Cinder pretended not to notice, which is his way of noticing very much. Ash knocked it off the second time and looked directly at Cinder while she did it, which Cinder responded to by becoming extremely interested in the middle distance. The third time, Ash sat on it. Not near it. On it. Cinder lifted his head, assessed the situation with the full dignity of a wolf who has absolutely no feelings about this whatsoever, and looked away. Luna watched all of this from across the shop and said nothing, which required considerable effort. Chelle watched from behind her crystal shelf and said nothing either, which required no effort at all because Chelle has known how this was going to go since the day Ash arrived and has simply been waiting for Cinder to figure it out. He is getting there. Slowly. With great dignity.
The multilayer chain set is now on the highest hook. Ash has not touched it since. This is what passes for progress.
The Ankh of Vel Ashara — the Egyptian symbol pendant — arrived warm. Not room temperature. Warm. Chelle placed it in the center of the display where both sides meet, because she said it belonged to neither of them and both of them, which is the most honest thing anyone has said about this display case since it arrived. Midnight and Cinder exchanged one of their looks when she said it — the particular look that means two males of very different species have arrived at the same baffled conclusion simultaneously. Neither of them said anything. They never do. The girls have the slight edge in this Attic, three to two, and both of them know it, and both of them have made their peace with it, and Midnight at least finds it quietly magnificent.
Here is what the display case knows: a necklace is not an accessory. It is a declaration. It sits at the throat — the place where breath becomes words, where the interior becomes the exterior, where what you carry inside finally gets to be seen. Chelle's necklaces say: I am rooted in the earth and I know where I came from and I am not afraid of what grows in the dark. Luna's necklaces say: I have been the dark and I have come back from it and I am wearing the proof. Together they say everything the Attic has ever tried to say — that the earth and the fire are not opposites. They are the same force. One display case. The full length of what it means to be alive and unafraid and adorned.
Luna has a necklace from this display that she never takes off. She hasn't said which one. Chelle hasn't asked. Midnight knows. He's not telling either.
The display case is lit. The necklaces are talking. One of them has already said your name — you just have to get close enough to hear it.
