Luna wearing the black Collector hooded-skull and scythe graphic tee near the Ashen Plains carnival, with the Collector’s exchange in the background.

The Debt That Wasn’t Hers

The man at the edge of the carnival pointed at Luna’s chest and said she owed him something. Beneath her open coat, The Collector – Grim Reaper 3D Print Tee showed a hooded skull and a sweeping silver-gray scythe across thin, silky polyester. The loose unisex tee came in six graphic options and sizes S–5XL. Luna looked down at the printed face, then back at the man.

“You’ll have to be more specific.”

The Path Between the Lights

She had been leaving the Laughing Dark’s outer stalls.

Behind her, the carnival music continued without anyone appearing to play it. Ahead, the ash flattened into the long gray distances of the Plains. The standing stones were somewhere beyond the last row of lights, far enough away that she could not yet hear their dusk chord.

The man had placed a narrow table across the space between two stalls.

Not across the whole path.

Just enough that anyone passing would have to brush its corner or step aside.

Luna had stepped aside.

Apparently that had been expensive.

“Passage,” he said.

She examined him.

A long coat. Gloves too clean for the ground beneath them. A book open on the table, its pages weighted with a small bone-white object.

“I didn’t pass through your stall.”

“You passed its boundary.”

“Your boundary has ambitious plans.”

He did not smile.

Beyond his shoulder, three figures at the neighboring stall stopped what they were doing.

Luna noticed.

She kept her hands where they could be seen.

The Price He Wouldn’t Name

“Pay now,” the man said.

“For what?”

“Passage.”

“You’ve said that. I’m asking what you want.”

He looked at her hands.

Then her throat.

Then, very deliberately, the space behind her.

Luna did not turn.

The Plains rewarded certain kinds of haste. Turning because someone wanted you to was rarely one of them.

“He collects,” the man said.

A thin change moved through the carnival’s outer lights.

Not darkness.

Attention.

The three figures beside the stall withdrew together, leaving their unfinished business on the counter.

Now Luna turned just enough to see.

A hooded figure stood where the path widened.

He had not been there a moment earlier.

Or he had, and everyone had only just become willing to notice.

The Figure Beyond the Fabric

She knew him.

Not from a single meeting. From six renderings laid out on cloth. From the stall near the carnival where she had bought them. From the way his presence could make a market feel suddenly less interested in wasting time.

The Collector.

His scythe rested upright beside him.

Nothing about him suggested urgency.

The man behind the table seemed pleased.

“You see?”

Luna looked at the Collector.

Then at the book.

She had crossed no gate. Accepted no goods. Made no agreement.

And the Collector did not take anything that was not his.

That was the part she remembered.

“Yes,” she said. “I see someone.”

She shifted sideways, giving the figure a clear path to the table.

The man’s expression changed.

Only a little.

Enough.

What Was Holding the Page

The Collector approached.

Luna stayed out of his way.

The gray light found the blade without finding a source. Beneath the hood, the shape of his face was familiar in the unpleasantly precise way a thing becomes familiar after you have worn its likeness against your ribs.

He stopped before the table.

His attention did not settle on Luna.

It settled on the book.

The man moved his glove over the little object holding the page down.

Too late.

Luna had already seen it.

An hourglass, scarcely longer than her thumb. Pale frame. Dark sand. One narrow chamber emptying into the other.

It had looked like a paperweight.

It no longer did.

“That,” the man said quickly, “was left.”

The Collector waited.

“At another stall.”

Stillness.

“I was keeping it safe.”

Luna glanced at the open book, at the false toll arranged beneath the object, at the hand now trying to conceal it.

“Busy little thing to use for keeping a page flat.”

The man looked at her with genuine dislike.

She could live with that.

The Collection

The Collector extended one hand.

No flourish.

No threat performed for the benefit of the surrounding stalls.

Just an empty palm.

The man did not move.

Somewhere behind them, the carnival music reached the beginning of a tune Luna was certain it had played already.

The Collector’s hand remained open.

The man lifted the hourglass.

For one instant, he appeared to consider putting it in his coat.

Luna watched the thought cross his face.

He thought better of it.

The hourglass changed hands.

The Collector turned it once between his fingers. Dark sand began its descent through the narrow center.

Then he stepped away.

He had collected precisely one thing.

Luna was not it.

The Way Left Open

The man closed the book.

“Your passage—”

Luna looked at him.

He did not finish.

She moved past the table without paying.

This time, he discovered that its boundary was much smaller than he had initially believed.

Beyond the last lights, the Plains opened around her.

The Collector stood a little way ahead, holding the hourglass. He did not beckon. He did not require company.

Luna paused at a respectful distance.

“He hoped I’d assume you were here for me.”

The hood turned slightly.

That was all.

She glanced down at the skull on her shirt.

“You do have an effect on people.”

A distant chord moved through the gray air. The standing stones had found the wind.

When Luna looked up again, he was gone.

She waited until she was certain of the path, then continued toward the perimeter.

Cinder rose when she came into view.

Ash appeared beside him, her attention briefly catching on the place behind Luna.

Nothing followed.

“Someone tried to charge me for walking,” Luna told them.

Cinder assessed her.

Ash looked back toward the carnival.

“No,” Luna said. “I don’t think he’ll try it again today.”

She crossed the remaining ground with them.

The printed scythe caught the last carnival light and lost it.

Six versions of the same figure lived in the Closet.

Today she had learned something the picture did not tell her.

Being afraid of what someone might take was not the same as owing it to them.
