It simply does not experience time the way things that breathe do. It has been doing this work since before the mesa had a name, and it will be doing it long after the last person who knows the name is gone. The stones in the shallows are not waiting to be found. They are simply finished. The river sets them down when it is done with them, and then it moves on, and the stone stays, and eventually someone comes along who knows how to receive what has been left.
Chelle has been coming to the Becoming Places for years.
She knows the particular quality of light in the canyon in the late afternoon — the way it comes in at an angle that makes the wet stones in the shallows glow from the inside, each one briefly lit as though it has something to say. She knows which bends in the stream run shallow enough to wade without losing her footing, and which ones run deep and cold and should be respected. She had been working the shallows for an hour — coat pockets already heavy with crystal chips and round beads, the particular harvest of a good afternoon in the Becoming Places — when she heard the register change at the bend ahead. She waded toward it. The water was cold and clear and running fast over a bed of stones that had been in the river long enough to lose every sharp edge they had ever had. She crouched at the waterline. She waited.

She picked it up. She put them in her coat pocket with the crystals and the beads and waded back to the bank.
Midnight was on the rooftop when she came through the portal. He lowered his head through the skylight — the slow, ancient consideration of a creature who has been watching rivers make stones for longer than the Soraveen have been standing beside them — and regarded the dew drops in her open palm. He did not rumble. He simply looked. The looking lasted a long time. Then he lifted his head back through the skylight and was still, and the stillness meant something, and Chelle set the stones on the display shelf and did not move them again.
