Chelle found the first pair in the stream below the western mesa. She was not looking for ear jewelry. She was looking for crystal chips and round beads for the bracelet work, crouching at the waterline with her coat pockets already full, when the dew drop shape surfaced in the current and came to rest against her boot. She held it up to the light. The stone was cool and smooth and heavier than it looked, and it caught the afternoon sun the way stones do when they have been polished by something patient and ancient and completely indifferent to how long it takes.

She brought it back. Midnight lowered his head through the skylight and regarded it for a long moment — the slow, ancient consideration of a creature who has been watching rivers make stones for longer than the Soraveen have been standing beside them. He did not rumble. He simply looked, and the looking meant something, and Chelle set the stone on the display shelf and did not move it again.

The stones that came through after that arrived in a small cloth pouch, cool to the touch, each one unique — because natural stone is always unique, always carrying the record of the water and the pressure and the particular mineral composition of the place it came from. No two pairs are exactly alike. This is not a flaw. This is the point.
