What Cinder Caught in the Web

The Wolf in the Web — Dream Catcher Wolf Earrings are dream catcher earrings with wolf at the center — one size, one design, exactly right. From the night Cinder sat under the web for three hours and nobody asked him why.
The dream catcher appeared on the back wall of the Attic on a Tuesday.
Not hung there — appeared. This is a distinction the Attic makes regularly and that everyone in it has learned to accept without requiring an explanation. Things appear. Things arrive. Things are simply present in the morning that were not present the night before, and the question of how they got there is less interesting than the question of what they are and what they are doing here and who they are waiting for. The dream catcher was on the back wall, between the portal and the crystal shelf, in the particular spot where the amber light from the front windows reaches at a specific angle in the late afternoon and makes everything it touches look like it has been there forever.
Cinder found it first. He came in from the back — the slow, deliberate entrance of a wolf who is not in a hurry and has never been in a hurry and finds the concept of hurry mildly baffling — and he stopped in the middle of the room and looked at the wall. He looked at the dream catcher. He looked at the wolf at the center of the web — the wolf rendered in the precise posture of a creature that is not running, not hunting, not performing any of the things wolves are usually depicted doing. Simply present. Alert. Exactly itself.
He sat down under it. He did not explain why. He sat there for three hours while the Attic moved around him — Chelle at the crystal shelf, Luna coming and going through the portal, Ash conducting her ongoing research into the lower shelves and the structural integrity of things that were stacked too close to the edge. Nobody asked Cinder why he was sitting under the dream catcher. Nobody needed to. The wolf at the center of the web was sitting in the same posture he was sitting in. He was simply keeping it company.
Ash noticed eventually. She came from the lower shelves and sat down beside him — not close, not touching, the precise distance that means she is there without being there, present without acknowledging that she is present, which is how Ash handles most things that matter to her. She looked at the dream catcher. She looked at the wolf. She looked at Cinder. She looked at the ceiling. She stayed.
Luna came through the portal an hour later and stopped in the doorway and looked at both of them sitting under the dream catcher and said nothing for a moment that was longer than her usual silences. Then she went to the counter and came back with the earrings — the wolf in the web, rendered small, rendered wearable, the dream catcher become the thing you carry rather than the thing you sit under. She set them on the floor between Cinder and Ash without explanation. Cinder looked at them. Ash looked at them. Ash knocked them approximately four inches to the left, which is how Ash says: these are good.
The earrings are here now. The wolf at the center of the web — present, alert, exactly itself. The dream catcher doing what dream catchers do: holding the web between the sleeping world and the waking one, catching what needs to be caught, letting through what needs to pass. The wolf knows the difference. It has always known the difference. It is sitting at the center of the web because the center of the web is exactly where it belongs.
The web catches what needs to be caught. The wolf knows what that is. So do you.
