She was not looking for anything. She had her coat pockets full of stones from the morning and her boots were wet and she was thinking about something else entirely when she stepped into the clearing and the wolf lifted its head.

It did not run. It did not threaten. It simply looked at her with the particular attention of something that has been in this clearing since before the path existed and has watched many things come through the gap in the trees and assessed all of them with the same unhurried precision. It looked at her the way the old woman at the eastern rim looks at hands — not at the face, not at the performance, but at the thing underneath.

Above it, strung between two branches at the edge of the clearing, was a dream catcher. Old. The web intact. The wolf had been sitting beneath it long enough that the question of which one had been there first — the web or the wolf — was no longer answerable. They had become the same thing. The web catches what is harmful. The wolf watches what approaches. Between them, nothing gets through that isn't meant to.

She stood at the edge of the clearing for a long time. The wolf looked at her. She looked at the dream catcher. The stream ran somewhere behind her. The light moved through the canopy the way it does in places that are older than the people who find them.

She did not approach. She did not reach for anything. She simply stood there until the wolf looked away — which is how the wolf says you may stay.

She came back through the portal with the image of it still in her eyes. Midnight was on the rooftop. He lowered his great head and looked at her for a long moment — not at what she was carrying, because she wasn't carrying anything. At her. He rumbled once, low and warm, and turned back to the horizon. Which is how Midnight says I know that clearing. I have been watching it since before the path existed.

The wolf is still there. The web is still strung between the two branches. The clearing is still older than the people who find it. These earrings are the record of the finding — the wolf and the web, together, the way they have always been.
