The Hearthside Annex keeps the stories that products carry when they arrive. The Moon Threshold — Spirit Cat Pendulum Board came from the Aether-Reach, where the mist condenses into crystals mid-fall and the light arrives from directions without names. Chelle brought three of them back. She did not explain why three. The Aether-Reach gives what it gives in the quantities it chooses, and Chelle has been going there long enough to know that the correct response is to carry what you're given and ask questions later. This is the story of the first time she used one. At the threshold. Before she brought it back. While the cat was still watching.

Hecate's Domain

The Aether-Reach is the place between places — where this world and the next are close enough to touch, where the veil is at its thinnest and the mist condenses into water drop crystals mid-fall, self-forming in the air at the precise point of contact between what is and what is not yet. Chelle knows it the way she knows the Sunrise Steppes — deeply, personally, with the specific familiarity of someone who has been coming here long enough that the place has stopped performing for her and started simply being itself in her presence.

It is Hecate's domain. Not in the sense that Hecate occupies it — the goddess of the crossroads does not occupy places the way smaller things occupy places, does not fill a room or hold a territory. She is the quality of the threshold itself. The particular attention of the in-between. The awareness that exists at the crossroads that is neither the road you came from nor the road you're going to, but the point of decision between them, which has its own consciousness and its own patience and its own way of knowing things that neither road knows.

Chelle does not worship at the Aether-Reach. She works there. This is a distinction that matters to her, and that she thinks Hecate, if she notices the difference, probably appreciates. You do not worship the earth. You work with it. You learn its patterns and its patience and its particular genius for keeping things until the right time and releasing them when the moment arrives. The Aether-Reach works the same way. Chelle came here to learn from it, and she has been learning, and she is still learning, and she expects she will be learning for a very long time.

The Board Was Already There

She had not gone to the Aether-Reach for the pendulum boards. She had gone for the crystals — the water drop ones, the self-forming mid-air formations that appear at the threshold when the conditions are right, which she has never been fully able to predict and has stopped trying to predict. The Aether-Reach gives what it gives. You show up. You pay attention. You carry what's offered.

The boards were on a flat rock at the edge of the threshold mist — not placed, not arranged, simply present in the way that things in the Aether-Reach are sometimes present, as though they have been there long enough that the question of how they arrived is no longer interesting. Three of them. Black, round, the surface worked with the triple moon above a spirit cat whose expression Chelle read immediately as the expression of something that has been waiting, without impatience, for exactly this visitor.

She crouched at the edge of the rock and looked at the nearest board. The cat looked back. Not a living cat — the image of one, worked into the surface with the precision of an artist who understood that the cat at Hecate's threshold is not decorative. It is functional. The cat knows which road leads where. It is watching you work out whether you are ready to know it too.

She had a question. She had been carrying it for three weeks — the kind of question that does not resolve itself through thinking because she already knew the answer and the thinking was a way of avoiding the knowing. She recognized this pattern in herself. She has a very clear view of her own evasions, which is one of the more uncomfortable aspects of earth magic: you become very good at seeing clearly, including the things you would prefer not to see clearly.

She did not have a pendulum. She unclasped the shortest of her silver necklaces — a simple chain, nothing on it, just the chain — and held it above the board.

The Question She Already Knew the Answer To

The mist moved around her. The crystals formed and fell in the slow way they fall here — not fast, not slow, simply at the pace of the threshold, which is different from the pace of either world on either side of it. The chain hung from her fingers above the surface of the board. The cat's eyes — worked into the black surface, not living, absolutely present — tracked the chain with the patience of something that does not need the answer to hurry.

She asked the question. Out loud. In the Aether-Reach, at the threshold, with the triple moon above the spirit cat and the self-forming crystals drifting past her in the mist, she said the thing she had not said in three weeks of thinking around it.

The chain moved.

Not dramatically — the Aether-Reach does not do dramatic. A slow, clear arc. The direction she already knew it would go, which is always how it works. The pendulum does not tell you what you do not know. It tells you what you already know and have been pretending you don't. The board is the place where the pretending stops — where the question meets the part of you that has already answered it and has been waiting, with the particular patience of things that do not need to hurry, for the rest of you to catch up.

She stayed at the threshold until the arc of the chain stilled. Reclasped her necklace. Picked up all three boards — they were clearly meant to come with her, the way certain things in the Aether-Reach are clearly meant to come with her, the way the threshold gives what it gives in the quantities it chooses. She did not ask why three. The Aether-Reach does not explain its arithmetic.

She came back through the portal with the boards and the crystals and the question finally answered, which is lighter than it sounds. Answered questions weigh less than unasked ones. She has known this for a long time. She is always slightly surprised by how true it continues to be.

What the Cat Already Knows

Midnight looked at the boards when she set them on the counter. He looked at the spirit cat on the nearest one — the image of it, worked into the black surface, the expression of patient, complete knowing. He rumbled once: the recognition rumble, low and certain, the sound he makes for things he has seen before in other centuries. He tilted his great head. The cat, in the particular light of that hour, seemed to tilt its head back.

Midnight knows what lives at Hecate's threshold. He has been watching the Aether-Reach from altitude since before the mist learned to make crystals. He is not going to start explaining what he knows about the cat at the crossroads. He does not need to. The cat already knows. The board already knows. The question you're carrying already has an answer. The pendulum is just the mechanism for the moment when you're ready to stop pretending otherwise.

That moment arrives differently for everyone. The threshold has been waiting for it, with complete patience, since before you knew you were on your way.

More from the Attic

If the threshold found you, the web runs further:

  • The Question It Actually Answers — Chelle in the Aether-Reach with the pendulum that moved before she touched it. The question that was never really about direction.
  • The Third Rumble — Chelle on the Attic rooftop with Midnight and the Ghost Wing pendant. The rumble he reserves for things from the in-between.
  • The Wolf Was Already There — Chelle at the clearing west of the Sunrise Steppes mesa. The wolf beneath the dream catcher. The permission that comes from being still enough to receive it.
  • What Midnight Watches — The Dragonjaw Hoops, forged by Midnight. He watches from the rooftop. He does not explain what he is watching for.
  • The Observatory at the Edge of Both Worlds — The Aether-Reach from a different angle. What Chelle found there when she was not looking for anything in particular.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pendulum board and how do I use it?

A pendulum board is a divination surface used with a suspended pendulum — crystal, metal, or a weighted cord. You hold the pendulum above the board, focus on a specific question, and read the direction of its movement (yes/no, circular, directional). The board provides orientation and structure. The pendulum provides movement. You provide the question — and, if you're honest, you already know the answer. The board is for the moment when you're ready to confirm it.

What does the spirit cat symbolize on a pendulum board?

The cat at the threshold is Hecate's oldest companion — not a symbol of mystery but a symbol of knowing. The cat knows which road leads where. On a pendulum board, the spirit cat orients the practice toward the right kind of question: not "what will happen" but "what do I already know that I haven't said out loud yet." The cat watches. The board listens. You ask.

What is the triple moon symbol?

Maiden, mother, crone — the three faces of the Triune goddess, the full cycle of Hecate's knowing. On a pendulum board, the triple moon marks the board as threshold magic: crossroads energy, liminal awareness, the wisdom that exists at the in-between. Not prediction. Reflection. The triple moon means this board is listening to the part of you that already knows — not trying to tell you something you don't.

What is the Aether-Reach?

The Aether-Reach is a location in the Pedlar's Attic story universe — the place between places, where this world and the next are close enough to touch, where the mist condenses into water drop crystals mid-fall at the point where the veil is thinnest. It is Hecate's domain: the crossroads of worlds, the threshold space. Chelle visits it like the Sunrise Steppes — deeply familiar, personally meaningful. Read more from the Aether-Reach →

Is this board good for beginners?

Yes. The mechanism is simple and the learning curve is honest: the skill you develop with a pendulum board is not divination technique — it is self-honesty. The better you become at asking what you actually want to know instead of what you think you're supposed to ask, the clearer the pendulum's response becomes. The board is the practice space for that skill. Start with a question you've been avoiding. The cat will be there when you're ready.
