Chelle had a theory about stones.
Not a complicated one. Just this: the right stone finds you before you find it. You think you're choosing, but really you've already been chosen — something in the color caught your eye, or the name landed differently than it should have, or you just kept coming back to the same one without knowing why. The Attic had been proving her right for years.
These came through in a cluster — nineteen of them, each one a different stone, each one on the same braided rope cord, adjustable, 16mm beads that sat heavy and real in the palm. She went through them one by one on the velvet shelf, holding each up to the light.
The amethyst first — deep purple, the color of the hour before a storm breaks, the stone of clarity and calm. Then the lapis lazuli, that particular blue that ancient civilizations ground into pigment because they couldn't find anything else that color in the world. The moss agate, green and clouded, like looking into still water over a riverbed. The carnelian, warm orange-red, the stone that has been carried for courage since before anyone wrote anything down. The lava stone, black and porous, still carrying something of the heat that made it.
She picked up the rose quartz last. Held it a long moment.
The beads were substantial — 16mm, which meant you felt them when you wore them, which was the point. The braided rope had the right texture, the kind that softens slightly with wear without going slack. The pendant sat centered and stayed there. She tugged the adjustable cord. It held clean, moved smoothly, locked where she set it.
She set them all back on the shelf in a row.
Nineteen stones. Nineteen different conversations the earth had been having with itself for a very long time, each one finally finding its way to the right wrist, the right neck, the right person.
You already know which one is yours. You just have to look.
