Midnight doesn't always announce himself.
Sometimes he's just there — a shadow at the edge of the Attic's upper gallery, wings folded, watching. Chelle had learned not to startle at it. The sapphire dragon had a way of making himself known when something came through the portal that he considered worth noticing. He didn't do it for everything. Only for the things that carried a certain kind of weight. The Dragon — 3D Dragon Graphic Tee — a dye sublimation dragon graphic tee in spandex-polyester blend, 6 colorways, adult sizing XXS through 6XL and kids sizing 100 through 160cm — arrived on a Thursday in a crate that smelled faintly of the Ironspire Peaks, and Midnight was in the gallery before Chelle had finished opening it.
Six colorways. Each one a different expression of the same fire. She pulled the first one out and held it up to the light. The dragon on the front wasn't printed so much as rendered — scales catching the light at different angles, the detail so precise she could see the texture of each one, the 3D depth lifting off the fabric the way Midnight himself lifts off the rooftop, with the unhurried certainty of something that has never once doubted its right to the sky. She turned it over in her hands. The fabric was smooth and substantial, the spandex-poly blend moving with her rather than against her, the kind that doesn't lose its shape after the first wash or the fiftieth.
She heard the low sound from the gallery above. Not a growl. Something closer to recognition. The particular resonance Midnight makes when the frequency of something matches what he already knows.
“You approve?” Chelle called up.
Silence. Then the slow sweep of a sapphire wing, catching the amber light from the high windows.
That was enough.
Luna came in an hour later, saw the tees spread across the display table, and picked up the darkest colorway without a word. She held it against herself. Looked in the mirror. Set it back down.
“I'm taking one,” she said.
“I know,” said Chelle.
