The druids who first crossed into the Aether-Reach did not come back empty-handed.

They came back with the zodiac, the birth chart, the planetary wheel — and something else. A symbol they had seen carved into the stone of the Observatory gates, pressed into the earth at every ley line convergence point they found on the other side. A looped cross. The shape that appears when you draw the horizon and the sun rising above it at the same moment. The ancient answer to the only question that has ever truly mattered: What comes after?

They brought it back. They pressed it into gold and silver and dark metal. They passed it to the Egyptians, who understood it immediately — who called it the ankh, the key of life, and built an entire theology around what the druids had found carved into the gates of a world where futures fall from the sky like rain. The ankh is the Aether-Reach's oldest symbol. It is the key to the portal. It has always been both things at once.

Chelle has worn one for as long as anyone at the Attic can remember. Not always the same one — she rotates them, the way she rotates everything in her personal collection, giving each piece its season. The ankh is her symbol in the way that turquoise is her stone and the Sunrise Steppes are her thinking place: not chosen so much as recognized, the first time she held one, as something that had always been hers.

The Ankh of Vel Ashara — Egyptian Symbol Pendant Necklace came out of the back room on a Tuesday — three of them, wrapped in dark cloth, the kind of wrapping Chelle uses for pieces she considers significant. Silver, gold, and dark. She set them on the oak counter without ceremony and stood back. Her earth magic moved through her hands and into the metal as she unwrapped each one, and she felt what she always feels with a good ankh: peace. Not the peace of emptiness. The peace of completion.

Luna came in from the back and looked at them on the counter. Picked up the dark one. Turned it over. Set it back down with the particular care she uses for things she respects but knows aren't hers.

"Personal collection?" she asked.

"Was," Chelle said. "They're ready to go out now."

Luna nodded. She understood. Some things you keep until they've finished teaching you what they came to teach, and then you let them go to the next person who needs the lesson. That's not loss. That's the whole point of the ankh.

Midnight circled the rooftop three times that evening. Chelle noticed. She always does.

The ankh doesn't promise you won't cross the threshold. It promises you something is waiting on the other side. That has always been enough.
