Chelle had been out since before sunrise.
That wasn't unusual. She had a habit of disappearing into the woods behind Ravenswood when something was pulling at her — not a thought exactly, more like a feeling in the soles of her feet, a low hum from the ground that said come find it. She'd learned a long time ago not to argue with that feeling.
She came back with mud on her feet, wildflowers tucked behind one ear, and the Barefoot & Rooted — Turquoise Woven Anklet already on her ankle — a handmade woven turquoise anklet in traditional ethnic pattern, adjustable and waterproof, the kind of craft that holds up because it was made to. She'd found it looped around a root at the base of the old oak, slipped off her sandals, and fastened it on right there. The portal didn't always wait for you to come to it.
She stood in the kitchen doorway, letting the morning light catch it.
Turquoise and warm thread, woven tight in the old way — the kind of pattern that takes patience, that you can't rush without it showing. She turned her foot slowly. The colors were true. The knots were even. It had the weight of something made by hand by someone who knew what they were doing.
She tugged at it gently. It held.
Adjustable, she noted. Waterproof too — she'd already walked through the creek twice that morning and it hadn't budged, hadn't bled, hadn't gone soft at the edges. It just sat there on her ankle like it had always been there, like it had grown there the same way the moss grows on the north side of the oak.
She made herself a cup of tea and sat on the back step, bare feet in the grass, anklet catching the light. And then she looked at it more carefully. The pattern. The particular shade of turquoise — not the bright market turquoise, but the deeper, dustier tone that came from stone worked slowly to the surface over geological time. The geometry of the weave, the way the thread was knotted at intervals she recognized.
This was a Steppes piece.
She didn't know how it had gotten this far from the Sunrise Steppes — whether the portal had carried it, or the earth had simply decided it needed to travel — but she knew the Soraveen's work when she held it. Patient. Unhurried. Made by hands that waited for the earth to offer rather than taking from it.
She finished her tea. Went back inside. Opened the ledger on the counter and logged it into the Earth Remembers series, where it belonged.
That's how you know it's the right kind of magic — it finds you before you find it, and it already knows where it's going.
