It was Cinder who found it first.

The wolf had been circling the back corner of the Attic for the better part of an hour — that low, restless orbit she did when something in the shop was pulling at her. Ash watched from the doorway, ears forward, tail still, reading his sister the way only a wolf could. When Chelle finally followed Cinder's gaze to the folded shirt on the old cedar shelf, she understood immediately. There was something in the design that felt older than the Attic itself — older than the portal, older than the lore carved into the walls. The ink-black print sprawled across the chest like a battle map drawn by hands that had held real swords: Norse warriors mid-charge, serpents coiling through runic script, the whole saga compressed into a single breathtaking image.

Chelle lifted it carefully, the way she handled anything that came through the portal with weight behind it. The fabric was lighter than she expected — soft, breathable, the kind of thing you could wear all day and forget you had on — but the design was anything but light. It carried the gravity of a people who had named their storms and sailed into them anyway. She turned it over once, twice, then held it up so the candlelight caught the print at an angle. The runes seemed to shift. Cinder made a sound low in her throat that wasn't quite a growl and wasn't quite approval, but was somewhere between the two.

Luna appeared from the stairwell with a mug of something warm and stopped dead when she saw it. She set the mug down on the nearest surface without looking, crossed the room in four steps, and took the shirt from Chelle's hands without asking. That was how Luna worked — she didn't request things she recognized as hers. She held it against herself, looked down at the warrior sprawled across her chest, and something in her expression went very quiet and very certain. Midnight, curled on the high shelf above the loom room door, opened one sapphire eye and watched her without comment. He had seen this before — the moment a piece from the portal found the person it had been waiting for. He always knew before they did.

The shirt went back on the shelf eventually, because that was the rule — everything in the Attic was for the ones who came looking. But Luna left her fingerprints on the cedar, and Cinder sat beside it until closing, and Ash didn't move from the doorway until the last candle burned low. Some things that come through the portal carry a story already written. This one carried a whole saga.
