He never introduced himself. He didn't need to. The Soraveen knew him the way they know everything in the stone country — by where he set up, by which direction he faced, by the particular quality of his stillness when the light began to change. He always faced west. Always. His wares laid out on a low flat stone at the mesa's edge, overlooking the valley and the stream below, the Becoming Places catching the last of the afternoon in the shallows. He had learned from years of being near the old woman — not from being taught, exactly, but from watching, from proximity, from the particular education of someone shy enough to pay attention to everything and quiet enough to hear what wasn't being said.

She faced east. He faced west. She made things in the first light. He made things in the last. The stone country held both of them, the way it holds everything — without preference, without explanation, without asking either of them to be anything other than what they already were.

These are the Hundred Evenings — 26 styles of long boho water drop and feather earrings, each one made in the dusk light above the Becoming Places. Crystal rhinestone drops in the colors of the valley at the end of the day — the deep copper of the canyon walls when the sun goes low, the warm amber of the stream catching the last light, the particular blue that comes into the sky above the Sunrise Steppes in the hour after the world has decided what kind of day it was. Feather drops that carry the weight of a long afternoon. Oil-finish dangles in the colors of things that have been in the sun all day and are finally, quietly, cooling.

He set them out one by one on the flat stone, facing the valley. He did not call out to anyone. He did not explain what he had made or why. He simply arranged them in the order that made sense to him — which was the order of the light, from the first long shadows to the last color above the mesa rim — and waited. The Soraveen came when they came. Chelle came when she came. He did not look up when she arrived. He was watching the stream below. She stood beside him for a long time before either of them said anything. The Becoming Places were doing what they always do — releasing what the earth had finished making, letting it go downstream in the shallows, round and patient and unhurried.

She picked up the first one. Set it down. Picked up another. He still did not look at her. He was watching the light change on the valley wall. She bought all 26. He nodded once, the way the Soraveen nod when something has gone exactly as it was always going to go. She walked back up the mesa path with her coat pockets full of the last light of the day. Midnight, from the rooftop, rumbled once when she came through the portal. Low. Warm. The sound he makes when something arrives that was worth the journey.

26 styles. 26 evenings. One for the day that ended in copper. One for the day that ended in blue. One for the day that needed a feather to carry it out. One for the day that needed something that would catch the last light in a room and hold it a little longer than the room expected.
