Forged in the Observatory at the Edge of the Known World
At the far northern reach of the portal's range, where the sky on the other side never fully darkens, there stands a tower called The Solarium of Vael. It was built by a pair of astronomers — a man and a woman — who spent forty years mapping every star visible from that world's sky. They never disagreed about the stars. They disagreed about everything else. And yet they never left.
When they finally completed the great map, they built two objects to commemorate it: a pair of Celestial Accords — armillary spheres small enough to wear, precise enough to navigate by, and designed to transform. Worn as a ring, the sphere sits close to the pulse point of the hand, where the body's own rhythm can be felt. Worn as a necklace, it rests over the heart. The astronomers believed that love, like navigation, required knowing where you were before you could find where you were going.
Chelle found the Solarium on a clear night when the portal opened somewhere high and cold and full of starlight. She almost didn't go through — the air on the other side had the particular quality of places that have held a great deal of feeling for a very long time. But she went. She always goes.
The tower was empty. The great map covered every wall, floor to ceiling, in silver ink on black stone. And on the central table, arranged in a perfect circle, were the Celestial Accords — dozens of them, each one identical, each one waiting.
There was a single line of text carved into the table's edge, in the old script of the Solarium. Chelle traced it with her finger and felt the translation rise through her earth magic like a tide:
"For the ones who found each other in the dark and decided to stay."
She brought them all through. Midnight was waiting on the rooftop when she returned, his gold eyes soft in the dark. He already knew.
