The Observatory keepers of the Aether-Reach built their instruments to hold the sky.

Not to measure it — measurement implies distance, the observer separate from the thing observed. The keepers understood something the astronomers of our world took centuries to approach: that the sky is not out there. It is in here. The planets move through you the way they move through the Reach's crystal rain — not metaphorically, not poetically, but as a matter of physical fact. The armillary sphere was their answer to this understanding. A working model of the celestial heavens, miniaturized, held in the hand — so that the navigator could feel the geometry of the sky against their skin and remember, at the pulse point, that they were not separate from what they were reading.

Chelle brought the Celestial Accord — Transformable Astronomical Ball Ring & Necklace Set back from the High Observatories after four days in the Reach. She set the box on the counter without a word. Silk-lined, small, unremarkable from the outside. Luna looked at it. Looked at Chelle. Said nothing. Cinder lifted his head from across the room and held it there, ears forward, reading something in the air that had no name in any language either of them knew. Ash went completely still.

Midnight lowered his head through the skylight. He did not rumble. He simply brought himself into the room — his great sapphire head at floor level, his ancient eyes on the box — and waited. He tilts his head at things that intrigue him. He tilted it now.

Chelle opened the box. Inside: two armillary spheres, each one a working model of the Reach's celestial geometry — the trading routes of the zodiac entities, the Observatory's navigation marks, the planetary rings that govern the crystal rain. At rest, each one is a ring — multi-layered, interlocking bands of burnished gold, settling onto the finger with the quiet authority of something that has always belonged there. With a slow, deliberate touch, the bands begin to move. One by one they pivot outward, expanding until the ring becomes a three-dimensional sphere: the full armillary, rotating, the zodiac symbols and navigation marks of the Reach's star-keepers engraved across every band.

It converts to a necklace as well — the sphere suspended on its chain, resting over the heart. Worn as a ring it sits at the pulse point. Worn as a necklace it rests where the Reach's crystal rain would land if it fell here. Both positions are correct. Both are the point.

She'd found two of them wrapped in the same cloth. They'd come through the portal together. They were meant to go out together.

Two people who navigate by each other. Who know, without having to say it, that love — like navigation — requires knowing where you are before you can find where you're going.

Midnight circled the rooftop twice before dawn. He approves of things that carry the weight of the heavens without being crushed by it.

The Aether-Reach is still turning above the Observatory. The Accord is here. The alignment is yours.
