The pendant came through the portal on a night when the moon was doing something it shouldn't — sitting too low, too bright, casting shadows that moved the wrong direction. Chelle noticed it first. She was closing up the Attic, running her fingers along the shelves the way she always did before locking the door, when she felt the cold of it before she saw it. A small weight on a chain, resting on the edge of the display case like it had always been there.
She held it up to the candlelight. The Celtic knot was precise — not stamped, not pressed, but worked, the kind of detail that takes patience or magic or both. She turned it over. The back was just as clean as the front — every line sharp, no hollow spaces, no shortcuts. At its center, the moonstone caught the flame and held it differently than glass would, differently than any ordinary stone. It seemed to breathe.
Luna came in from the back room and stopped when she saw it. She didn't say anything for a moment. Then: "Where did that come from?"
"The portal," Chelle said. "Where else?"
Luna took it carefully and ran her thumb along the chain — cool, smooth, solid. The kind of weight that tells you immediately it isn't going anywhere. She chose the O chain, 50cm, and fastened it around her neck without asking. It settled against her collarbone like it had been made for exactly that spot. Cinder lifted his head from the corner where he'd been sleeping, watched her for a moment, then put it back down. Ash didn't even stir. Even the wolves knew when something was right.
It went on the shelf the next morning, in the Moonlit Adornments case, next to the others. People who picked it up tended to go quiet. They'd turn the knot in their fingers, feel the weight of the moonstone, hold it up to whatever light was available. Some put it back. Most didn't.
The Attic doesn't bring things through without reason. This one arrived on a moon night. Make of that what you will.
