On the other side of the Attic's portal, there is a place called the Ashwood Vale — a forest that exists in permanent twilight, where the trees grow silver-barked and the air smells of rain that never quite falls. The Vale sits at the edge of two worlds: the living and the remembered. Nothing dies there. It simply… changes form.
The moths of the Ashwood Vale are unlike any creature here. They are called Duskwings — enormous, silent, with wingspans wide as an outstretched hand. Their wings carry the markings of skulls, not as a warning, but as a map. Each skull pattern is unique, said to be the face of someone the moth has guided safely through the dark.
The artisans of the Vale — a quiet order known as the Greyhand Smiths — have cast the Duskwing in silver for centuries. Not as decoration. As protection. A Duskwing pendant worn close to the heart was believed to call the moth to you in your darkest hour, to guide you through whatever threshold you were afraid to cross.
Chelle found a small crate of them just inside the portal threshold, wrapped in dark cloth and tied with a cord of braided ash bark. There was no note. There never is, with the things that matter most.
She unwrapped one and held it up to the candlelight. The skull moth was intricate — every vein of the wing present, the skull at its center detailed enough that she could feel the individual markings under her thumb. The silver-tone finish caught the flame and held it differently than plain metal would. She turned it over. The back was clean and finished, the bail solid, the kind of construction that doesn't pull apart at the chain. The skull seemed, for just a moment, to blink.
"Someone sent these through on purpose," she said.
Luna looked up from across the room. "Then someone wanted them found."
