Midnight had been circling the old watchtower ruins for the better part of an hour before Luna finally looked up.
They were camped at the edge of a collapsed fortress somewhere in the highlands — the kind of place that had clearly been important once, the kind of place that still felt important even in ruin. The stones were warm from the day’s sun, and the sky above was going deep violet at the edges, the first stars just beginning to show. Luna had the shirts spread out across a flat section of wall, examining them one by one in the fading light. The portal had delivered the whole collection at once, which it almost never did, and she was still trying to figure out what that meant.
The phoenix came first — wings spread wide across the chest, trailing embers rendered in extraordinary 3D detail, mid-resurrection, the colors shifting from deep amber at the wingtips to near-white at the center. She held it up and Midnight banked low overhead, close enough that she felt the air move. He didn’t land. He just looked at it, then looked at her, then climbed back into the darkening sky.
“Yeah,” she said. “I thought so too.”
The dragons came after — ten colorways, each one a different beast, each one rendered with the kind of detail that made you feel like the thing on the shirt had been drawn from life rather than imagination. Bold and dark and built to be noticed. Cinder nosed at the one closest to her, then sat back and watched Midnight circle with an expression that could only be described as professional respect.
Chelle arrived just as the stars came fully out, took one look at the collection laid across the ancient stones, and said nothing for a long moment. Then: “He’s going to be insufferable about this.”
Above them, Midnight let out a sound that was not quite a roar and not quite a laugh, and the ruins lit briefly gold.
