The trail had gone cold somewhere above the treeline, and Luna didn’t care even a little.

She was sitting on a flat boulder at the edge of a mountain pass, boots unlaced, the wind pulling at her hair, holding the shirt up against the last pale light of the evening sky. The print across the chest was extraordinary — a vintage compass rose at the center, surrounded by concentric rings of aged cartography, latitude lines, and at the outer edge, a full celestial calendar with the zodiac rendered in the style of an old astronomer’s chart. It looked like something a navigator and a stargazer had designed together in a candlelit room a very long time ago, and somehow it had found its way through the portal and into her hands on a mountain in the middle of nowhere.

Chelle appeared from the switchback below, breathing harder than she’d admit, and stopped when she saw what Luna was holding. She crossed the last few yards of trail without a word and sat down beside her. For a long moment they both just looked at it — the compass pointing nowhere in particular, the stars arranged in their ancient order, the map lines suggesting roads that no longer existed or perhaps never had. Cinder pressed her nose against the fabric from Luna’s other side. Ash sat a few feet back, watching the horizon the way he always did, as if he already knew what was coming next and was simply waiting for everyone else to catch up.

“The portal has a sense of humor,” Chelle said finally.

Luna folded the shirt carefully and tucked it into her pack. “Or a sense of timing.” She looked out at the valley below, the last light going amber and gold across the ridgeline. “Either way, we keep it.”

They made camp just past the pass that night, and when the stars came out they matched the ones on the shirt almost exactly. Chelle noticed. She didn’t say anything about it, but she noticed.
