The Attic had been humming since before dawn — that low, resonant sound it made when something had come through the portal that mattered.
Chelle had learned not to rush it. She moved slowly through the morning racks, fingers trailing fabric, letting the building lead her the way it always did when it had something to say. Past the velvet coats. Past the rack of things that smelled faintly of cedar and old rain. She almost walked past the tees entirely.
Then the light caught one, and she stopped.
The angel on the fabric seemed to glow from within — not the glow of dye or thread, but something older, something that remembered what it felt like to move through air that had no ceiling. The design was full-body, luminous, rendered in fluorescent color that shifted depending on how the light hit it. The polyester was impossibly soft under her fingers, high-stretch, the kind of fabric that breathes and moves and doesn’t fight you. She held it up and turned it slowly, watching the angel’s wings catch the candlelight from the sconces along the wall.
“You’ve been waiting,” she said quietly.
The Attic hummed in agreement.
She set it back carefully and looked at the rest of the rack. Thirteen colorways, each one slightly different — the same angel, the same luminous quality, but each carrying its own particular frequency. Some were darker, the angel emerging from shadow. Some were bright enough to stop traffic. She stood there for a long time, just looking, the way you look at something when you understand that it arrived here for a reason and your job is simply to make sure it finds the right person.
By the time Luna came downstairs, Chelle had already set three aside.
“For who?” Luna asked.
“I’ll know when they walk in,” Chelle said.
