It came through on a Thursday.
Chelle knew because Thursday was the night the portal ran warm — something about the angle of the moon and the particular way the candlelight bent in the Underground Chamber. She'd learned to keep the velvet shelf clear on Thursdays. Whatever arrived needed room to breathe. This time it was six of them, folded with unusual care, placed between a jar of dried moonflower and a compass that always pointed slightly wrong. Midnight's Fire — 3D Dragon T-Shirt — a 3D HD dye sublimation dragon graphic tee in soft spandex-polyester blend, 6 colorways, adult sizing XXS through 6XL and kids sizing 100 through 160cm — each one carrying the same design: a dragon rendered in vivid depth across the chest, scales catching the amber light like they were made of something more than ink.
Chelle picked up the nearest one — deep and dark, the dragon coiled in shadow and fire — and held it up to the light. The dragon's eye seemed to follow her. She set it back down carefully.
Luna found her still standing there twenty minutes later.
“You've been staring at a shirt,” Luna said from the doorway.
“It's staring back,” Chelle said.
Luna crossed the room and picked up one of the others — a warmer colorway, the dragon rendered in golds and reds, scales like embers. The fabric was soft in a way that surprised her — the kind of soft that didn't feel like a compromise, that moved with you rather than against you. She held it up to the light. The print was flawless: deep, saturated color, every scale sharp at the edges, the kind of detail that didn't blur or soften no matter how close you looked. She ran her thumb across the chest. Nothing shifted. Nothing cracked.
“Midnight,” Luna said. Not a question.
From somewhere above them, in the rafters where the sapphire dragon liked to coil when he thought no one was watching, came a low rumble. Not quite a sound. More like a feeling in the floor. The kind that meant yes, obviously, keep up.
Chelle laughed despite herself. “He did it again.”
“He always does,” Luna said. “He just doesn't like to admit it.”
She held the shirt up one more time. The dragon on the chest caught the candlelight. For just a moment — just a breath — it looked like the scales moved.
They put all six on the shelf by the front window, where the morning light would hit them first. Chelle had learned, over time, that some things from the portal were just things. Beautiful things, useful things, things that deserved a good home — but things. And some things carried a little of the magic with them. A warmth that didn't come from the sun. A weight that felt like being watched over rather than watched.
These were the second kind.
She didn't write that on the tag. She never did. Some things you had to find out for yourself — the moment you pulled it on and felt that warmth settle across your shoulders, that low hum of something ancient and sapphire-scaled keeping half an eye on you, wherever you went.
Midnight's fire. Carried in the fabric. Worn by whoever was ready for it.
