This is not a metaphor — the fairies of the Silken Court have been tending the mist and the fabric and the particular quality of light that comes through the canopy for longer than anyone has been keeping records, and they have opinions about what gets worn in their valley and what doesn't. Chelle learned this on her first visit, when she arrived in the wrong thing entirely and found, folded neatly on a root at the edge of the path, something considerably better. She looked around. These came through the portal in a bundle that smelled like the valley — green and clean and the particular floral-mineral scent of a place where the waterfall has been running since before the oldest tree in the forest was a seed.
