Luna has a shelf above the register.

Most people don't notice it. They're too busy looking at the merchandise, or at Luna herself, or at the faint shimmer in the air near the back of the store that Chelle insists is just the lighting.

But the shelf is there. And on it: a single candle, always lit. A small hourglass, always running. And a skull — smooth, white, slightly too perfect to be anything ordinary — that she found in a crate that arrived with no return address and no explanation.

She named it Gerald.

Why Gerald? Chelle asked once.

Luna shrugged. He looks like a Gerald.

The thing about skulls, Luna will tell you if you ask (and sometimes if you don't), is that people get them wrong. They think skulls mean death. They don't. They mean remember. Memento mori — remember that you will die — which sounds dark until you realize what it's actually saying is: you're alive right now, so act like it.

Gerald would approve, she said.

The candle flickered. The hourglass kept running.
