The coast on the other side of the portal doesn't look like any coast Chelle had ever seen.
The water was the wrong color — too vivid, too many blues at once, shifting between teal and deep violet depending on where the light hit. The cliffs were black glass. And the tide came in sideways, which she had stopped questioning after the third time.
She had followed a sound. Not music exactly — more like the memory of music, the kind that lives in the back of your skull and won't leave. It led her down to a cove she almost missed, tucked behind a fold in the cliff face that didn't exist until she was standing in front of it.
There was a woman there. Or something shaped like a woman. She was sitting on a flat rock at the waterline, holding a folded tee in both hands the way you'd hold something you weren't sure you wanted to give away.
She looked at Chelle for a long moment. Then she held it out.
Chelle took it. The fabric was softer than she expected — light and stretchy, the kind that moves with you rather than against you. She unfolded it and held it up. The print was extraordinary: scales and water and color that shifted as she turned it, deep teal bleeding into coral bleeding into something that had no name in any language she knew. It looked like the ocean had decided to become a garment.
"What is it?" Chelle asked.
The woman tilted her head. "A reminder," she said. "That the water remembers everyone who ever stood at its edge and felt it pull."
She was gone before Chelle could ask anything else. Just the cove, the sideways tide, and the tee folded over her arm.
Midnight was waiting on the rooftop when she came back through. He circled it twice, which means he approved.
