The tee had been in the back of the Attic for three days before Luna touched it.
That wasn't like her. She was usually the first one into anything that came through the portal with teeth — and this one had teeth. The 3D dragon print covered the entire front, a roaring beast rendered in dimensional detail so sharp you could count the scales along the jaw, trace the ridges of the horns, follow the curl of smoke rising from the open mouth. The colors shifted depending on the light — deep in shadow, blazing in sun, the kind of print that doesn't sit still because it was never meant to.
She'd been circling it.
Cinder noticed first. The wolf had been watching Luna the way she always did when something was working on her — patient, still, ears slightly forward. Ash had given up and gone to sleep by the door. But Cinder stayed.
On the third night, Luna finally picked it up.
She held it at arm's length and looked at it the way you look at something that might look back. The fabric was lighter than it looked — silky against her fingers, the kind of thin polyester that moves with you instead of against you. She ran her thumb along the print. The detail held at the edges. No bleeding, no softness where the scales met the background. Whoever had made this had understood that a dragon doesn't blur.
She pulled it on.
Cinder stood up immediately.
"I know," Luna said quietly. "I felt it too."
There are things in the Dragonforged mythology that don't have clean explanations — moments where the boundary between the artifact and the person wearing it goes soft, where you stop being sure which one chose the other. The Attic had always attracted those kinds of things. Objects that waited. Objects that knew.
This was one of those.
Luna wore it out of the Attic that night without folding it, without bagging it, without doing any of the things Chelle would have done. She just walked out into Ravenswood with Cinder at her side and the dragon on her chest and the dark ahead of her, and whatever was waiting in the trees took one look and decided to wait somewhere else.
The Dragonforged don't wear their power. They wear what already knows them.
