Luna didn't find it. It found her.

She'd been reorganizing the case near the back of the Attic — the one that held the pieces that didn't fit anywhere else, the ones that came through the portal already knowing they were different — when the Gothic Death Moth Rosary Necklace slid forward on its own. Black beads, hand-knotted on a long chain, and at the end of it: a cross pendant with a death moth rendered across it, wings spread the full width of the crossbar, the moth and the cross occupying the same space as if they'd always been one thing.

She held it up to the candlelight.

The beads caught the flame in a way that black beads shouldn't — not reflecting it, exactly, but acknowledging it. The pendant turned slowly on the chain. The moth's wings filled the cross completely — not decorating it, not sitting on top of it, but fused with it, the two symbols collapsed into one. This wasn't a piece for the timid. It wasn't a piece for people who wear jewelry to be pretty. It was a piece for people who understand that the moth flies toward the flame on purpose — that the cross means something different depending on who's wearing it — that darkness and devotion have always lived in the same house.

Cinder padded over and sat beside her. Not investigating. Just present, the way the wolf always was when something significant arrived.

Luna fastened it around her neck without looking in a mirror. The beads settled against her collarbone, the moth-cross resting at the center of her chest. She looked down once.

"Yeah," she said quietly. "That's the one."

Ash knocked something off the shelf in the background. Nobody acknowledged it.

The moth doesn't fear the flame. It chooses it. There's a difference — and the people who wear this piece already know which one they are.
