Cinder was at the door when she came through. He looked at the pendant. Looked at Luna. Put his head back down with the expression of a wolf who has recognized something and decided it is exactly where it belongs. High praise.

Ash knocked something off the shelf. Nobody acknowledged it.

The death moth doesn't fear the flame. It chooses it. In the Ashen Plains that distinction matters more than anywhere else — the difference between what is consumed and what chooses to go toward the light anyway, knowing the cost, making the crossing on its own terms. They recognized it the same way Luna did — not as something new, but as something they've been carrying the shape of for a long time, finally made visible.
