They argued about it for ten minutes.
Not loudly — Chelle and Luna didn't do loud when it was something that actually mattered. But the Ankh & Pentagram Wiccan Rosary Necklace had come through the portal that morning and they'd both reached for it at the same time, and now it was sitting on the velvet cloth between them while they made their cases.
Chelle wanted it because of the ankh. The ancient Egyptian symbol of life, of breath, of the thing that keeps moving after everything else stops — she recognized it the way you recognize something you've always known. She'd worked with that symbol in her healing practice for years. It belonged in her domain.
Luna wanted it because of the pentagram. Five points, five elements, the old pagan geometry that predates most of what people call religion — she'd worn that symbol in one form or another since before she'd learned to pass as human. It was hers.
The black beads ran between both pendants on a long rosary chain, connecting them, refusing to let either symbol exist without the other. The ankh at one end. The pentagram at the other. The beads between them like a conversation that had been going on for centuries.
Midnight rumbled from the rooftop. Cinder lifted his head. Ash pretended to be asleep.
Eventually Chelle picked it up and held it out to Luna. "You wear it first," she said. "I'll know when it comes back to me."
Luna took it without arguing, which was how you knew it had meant something.
Some pieces don't belong to one person. They belong to the conversation between two people who both understand what the symbols mean — and trust each other enough to share them.
The ankh remembers. The pentagram knows. The beads between them keep the count.
