Chelle found it on a Tuesday, which was unusual.

The portal didn't tend to run on Tuesdays. But there it was — three of them, coiled on the velvet shelf like they'd been waiting a while. Wood beads, 10mm, warm and smooth in the hand. A cross pendant at the end, the Virgin Mary on one face, INRI on the other. Simple. Deliberate. The kind of thing made by someone who understood that devotion doesn't need to be loud to be real.

She picked up the brown one first. It was the color of old church pews and forest floors after rain — the kind of brown that felt like it had been somewhere, seen something, held something. She ran her thumb along the beads one by one. They were even. Solid. No rough edges, no hollow rattle. The chain between them had weight without being heavy, the way a well-made thing always does.

She set it down and picked up the black. Darker. Quieter. The kind of piece you wear when you're not looking for attention — when the prayer is between you and whatever you're praying to, and nobody else needs to know it's happening.
