The monastery has no name. The people who carved it into the rock face of the mountain decided, very early, that to name it would be to suggest it was a destination. It is not a destination. It is a direction. A turning of the face. The The Quiet Prayer — Wood Bead Rosary Necklace came from there — 10mm wood beads, smooth and warm in the hand, a cross pendant with the Virgin Mary on one face and INRI on the other, in brown, black, or yellow — made by hands that were praying while they worked, in the understanding that the making of a sacred thing is itself a sacred act.

Chelle brought them back wrapped in undyed linen, the way she brought everything from the monastery. She set them on the counter without ceremony. Three of them, coiled on the velvet — brown, black, yellow — each one carrying the particular quality of something made in altitude and silence, far from the noise of the world below.

She picked up the brown one first. It was the color of old stone floors worn smooth by centuries of knees — the floors of the monastery's chapel, which holds only a handful of people, built for the individual and not the crowd. She ran her thumb along the beads one by one. Even. Solid. The chain between them had weight without being heavy, the way a well-made thing always does. The kind of weight that reminds your hands what they're holding.

The black she set aside without a word. Quieter. The kind of piece you wear when the prayer is between you and the One you're speaking to, and nobody else needs to know it's happening. The monastery was built for exactly that — the single person, alone, in the silence of high altitude, closing their eyes and speaking. This bead carries that silence in the wood.

The yellow surprised her. Warm gold-toned, the beads catching the candlelight in a way that made them look almost lit from within. Less solemn than the others. More like gratitude than grief. She held it for a moment longer than the others. Not every prayer comes from a hard place. Some come from the other side of one.

She laid all three out and stood back.

Midnight did not rumble.

He went silent — the great sapphire dragon, ancient beyond any reckoning the Attic has attempted, completely and reverently silent on the rooftop above. Because there is a hierarchy to things. And Midnight, who sits near the top of most hierarchies simply by existing, knows where he sits in this one. The silence was not absence. It was the most complete acknowledgment he is capable of making.

Nobody spoke for a long time.

You do not need to have climbed the mountain. You only need to close your eyes, wherever you are, and speak. The One at the top of it has been listening since before the mountain existed. He is listening now.

The highest place is not a location. It is a direction. And it is always, always open.
