The Map Was Perfect

The woman unfolded her map across the counter.

It had survived rain, several ambitious corrections, and an encounter with something sticky enough to preserve a small leaf against the southern road.

“I know exactly where I’m going,” she said.

The shopkeeper moved a tray away from the spreading paper.

“That sounds useful.”

“I just don’t know whether I want to arrive.”

Outside, evening footsteps passed the window. Someone paused at the door, considered coming in, then continued down the street. She watched the shadow leave.

“Everyone was very pleased when I agreed.”

“Were you?”

She smoothed a crease that immediately rose again.

“I was very good at agreeing.”

A Point Without Instructions

The necklace lay beside the map.

A purple point, its facets crossed by a slender silver-coloured wrap. The wire travelled around the pendant without hiding it, leaving little windows through which the colour changed with the light.

She lifted it by the chain.

“Does this do anything?”

“It hangs rather nicely.”

“I meant—”

“I know.”

The shopkeeper waited while she turned it.

“I haven’t a necklace that can make your decision for you.”

“Unfortunate.”

“For the necklace, certainly. Imagine being blamed for every disappointing inn.”

She laughed.

It surprised her enough that she looked down at the map, as though it might object.

The pendant swung above a carefully inked crossroads.

Left. Right. Straight ahead.

Then it turned slowly on its chain and pointed at none of them.

The Unmarked Road

“There’s a workshop,” she said.

The shopkeeper leaned back against the shelves.

“On your route?”

“Not remotely.”

“Ah.”

“They repair old musical instruments. My aunt knew the owner. Years ago, he said I could visit if I ever came that way.”

“Have you?”

“I keep managing not to.”

She lowered the pendant onto her palm. The purple looked darker there than it had against the paper.

“It might have closed.”

“It might.”

“He might not remember.”

“Also possible.”

“You’re not particularly reassuring.”

“You seem to have had plenty of people telling you how things will turn out.”

That left a silence neither of them hurried to fill.

At last, she reached for her pencil.

She drew a small circle well away from the thick, certain line of her journey. Beside it, she wrote the workshop’s name from memory.

Then she added a question mark.

“That’s not a proper route,” she said.

“Not yet.”

Something Chosen

She bought the purple necklace.

Not because it had pointed toward the workshop. It hadn’t.

Not because anyone had promised her courage, good fortune, or a welcome waiting behind its door.

She liked the colour.

For once, that was a reason she did not improve upon for somebody else.

At the mirror, she fastened the chain and settled the pendant against her shirt. The wire caught a brief line of lamplight.

Then she folded the map differently, bringing the small pencilled circle to the outside.

“Which way from here?” the shopkeeper asked.

She glanced through the window.

“First? Something to eat.”

“Excellent navigation.”

She left with the necklace at her throat and a question mark where a promise used to be.

Some things are worth carrying because they tell you nothing, and leave room for your own answer.

About This Piece

The Threaded Compass is a decorative wire-wrapped point necklace. The photographed standard design has an elongated, faceted pendant with pointed ends, held inside an open crisscrossing wire wrap.

  • Standard pendant size: approximately 16 × 38mm, as listed by the supplier.
  • Listed chain length: 45cm.
  • Package: one pendant necklace.
  • Metal-colour options: silver-tone or gold-tone for the named stone-style variants.
  • Named options: Amethyst, Aventurine, White crystal, Blue sand, Tiger Eye, Rose Quartz, and Opal.

The supplier uses “natural crystal” as a general description, but the composition, treatment, and natural or manufactured origin of each individual option have not been independently verified. The option names identify the supplier’s selections; they are not gemstone certification.

“Silver” and “Gold” in the option names describe colour, not verified precious-metal content. The chain and wrapping metal are unspecified.

Choosing Your Pendant

Choose the colour and finish you enjoy wearing, whether that means a pale pendant against dark clothing, a deeper point against a light neckline, or a gold-tone wrap among your existing layers.

There is also a separately named “Moon” option. Its design, material, and dimensions are not established by the standard point-necklace description, so do not assume it matches the pictured crystal points or their listed measurements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the necklace include a chain?

Yes. The supplier describes one pendant necklace with a 45cm chain.

How large is the pendant?

The supplier lists the standard pendant at approximately 16 × 38mm. These measurements are not confirmed for the separately named Moon option.

Is the wire solid silver or gold?

No solid-silver or solid-gold specification is provided. Treat the Silver and Gold option labels as silver-tone and gold-tone colours.

Are all the options natural gemstones?

That has not been verified. Although the supplier uses a general natural-crystal description, it does not provide individual material certification or treatment information for every option.

What is White crystal?

White crystal is the supplier’s option name. The available information does not establish a more precise mineral identification.

What is Blue sand?

Blue sand is the supplier’s option name for a dark blue-style pendant. Its precise composition is not specified in the available product information.

Will mine look exactly like the photograph?

The photographs show the general design and colour choices. Colour, translucency, markings, and the appearance of the wrap may differ between individual pieces, and screen settings can affect colour.

Is it a working compass or a healing pendant?

No. The Threaded Compass is its story name. This is decorative jewellery, with no promised navigational, medical, healing, or protective function.

This one is so much better than the gold one i got from a different seller last year. that one is almost onyx black but this one has such beautiful coloration. it actually looks purple and not black, and there is some lovely light veining running through it. i don't like buying things twice but if i can get a gold one this pretty i may need to hit this seller up next time i make a purchase!
