This one came off the loom on a morning when the light through the Attic's high windows was doing something unusual — splitting into colors that had no business being there, bending through the dust in the air like something was trying to show Chelle the full spectrum of a thing she already knew. She found the tapestry rolled and waiting by the door to the back room. She unrolled it slowly on the oak table.

The Tree of Life spread across the fabric in a cascade of color — root to crown, each layer of the canopy shifting through a different frequency of light. Not painted. Woven. She ran her fingers along the surface and felt the texture of it, the way the threads held their color without bleeding into each other, each band distinct and deliberate. The fabric was smooth and substantial — the kind that hangs straight without needing to be coaxed, that doesn't bunch or pull at the corners.

Luna came in and stood at the other end of the table, looking at it from the roots up.

"It's a map," she said.

"Of what?" Chelle asked.

Luna thought about it for a moment. "Everything that's connected."

It went on the wall of the Attic that afternoon, in the long corridor between the display floor and the back room. Every person who walked past it slowed down. Most of them stopped. A few reached out to touch it — just once, just to feel whether it was as real as it looked.

It always was.
