Chelle noticed the rain had stopped before she noticed anything else.
That particular silence — the one that comes right after, when the world is still dripping but the sky has gone quiet — was her favorite kind. She was standing at the window of the Attic with a cup of tea going cold in her hand when she saw them on the sill: eight pendants, lined up in a row, each one catching what was left of the grey afternoon light.
Water drop cut. Faceted natural stone, each face angled to pull the light in and hold it a moment before letting it go. She picked up the pink crystal first — soft, warm, the color of early morning before the sun has fully committed. Then the amethyst, deeper, the purple of still water in shadow. The green aventurine, the color of new growth after a long winter. The tiger eye, warm gold-brown with that particular shimmer that moves when you move, like something alive inside the stone.
She held the opal up last and just looked at it for a while.
The pendant was small — 2.5 by 1.2 centimeters, which is exactly the right size for something that doesn't need to announce itself. The chain was 40cm with a 5cm extender, which meant it sat at the collarbone or just below depending on how you wore it. She fastened the pink crystal around her neck and checked the clasp. It caught clean the first time. The pendant hung straight, the facets catching the light with every small movement, the way a raindrop does on a windowpane before it falls.
She picked up her tea. Still warm enough.
Outside, the world was still dripping. Inside, eight stones sat on the sill, each one waiting for the right person to look down and recognize it.
The earth makes these slowly. They arrive when they're ready.
