Cinder heard it before anyone else did — that particular stillness that comes just before something extraordinary decides to show itself.
They were crossing a wide meadow at the edge of a valley, the kind of place where the grass grows tall enough to brush your hands if you walk with your arms out, and the morning mist hadn’t fully lifted yet. Luna had the shirt draped over her shoulder, still folded the way it had come through the portal, when Cinder stopped dead and Ash went rigid beside her. Both wolves were staring at the far tree line. Luna turned to look, and for a moment she thought she saw something moving through the mist — something large and dark and impossibly fast, mane streaming, hooves barely touching the ground. Then the mist shifted and there was nothing there at all.
She unfolded the shirt slowly. The horse on the front was mid-gallop, rendered in extraordinary 3D detail — every muscle defined, the mane caught in motion, the eyes carrying that particular wildness that can’t be trained out of something that was born free. The colorway she’d pulled from the portal was deep and earthy, the kind of tone that looked like it had been dyed with soil and bark and the last light before a storm. She held it up and the wolves looked at it the way they’d looked at the tree line — with recognition, not surprise.
Chelle caught up from the trail behind them, slightly out of breath, and stopped when she saw the shirt. She looked at it for a long moment, then looked at the tree line, then back at the shirt. “Did you see —” she started.
“No,” Luna said. She folded the shirt back up and tucked it under her arm. “But I think it saw us.”
They walked the rest of the meadow in silence. Cinder kept glancing back over her shoulder the whole way to the other side.
